I have a 98 Lexus 400 (with Nav). Any advice re whether it is possible to use a digital phone with a hands-free speaker? Is it feasible? (e.g. somebody said that the 98 had analog phone wiring which wouldn't take a digital phone). Or any tips on where to research. Thanks for any help.

According to what I was told when I asked a related question, the pre-wiring is Lexus-proprietary. In other words, you install a Lexus phone "kit" from the Lexus dealership and for '98 analog was the only option.

Aftermarket phones from your neighborhood cellular dealer don't seem to work. My Lexus factory-integrated Motorola Portable-Plus cell phone crapped out recently and only another one -from Lexus- will work. $490 just for the handset.

I have the same problem Tam. My 98 has the Portable Plus and I hate it, and there is no way to integrate my Digital StarTac, I had 3 dealers look into it.

So there is no way to do this?? does anyone have the diagrams to the cables going into the phone?? at least we might be able to use the "headset" type of the phone. Possible?

and no, ive looked it over, there isnt.

the factory fone is nothing more than a mic in teh a-pillar and a relaybox sending the incoming sound to the rear left speaker. think of it as a GIANT headset.
