Default Another ECM question yes I searched

I've searched and can't find a definite answer. I have a 49 state 97 ls400 1UZ (with no smog/egr whatsoever) in a 1990 Toyota Pickup. I'm using a 96 ls400 ecm... and it fried. I know I need to use a 95-96 ecm because of the ignition lockout on the 97's. I'm finding a lot on ebay that say 95-97 but when I crossreference the part numbers with a chart I found here, many of them are "cali" model ecms.... does it matter? I'm currently running 89661-50303. The ecms I'm looking at are 50231 and 50234

yes it does matter. Cali model ecus only work on Cali models which is why they are a bit more dear.

I still find it strange that an ecu will not work on an engine that likely has the same sensors as the model the ecu is for. Same goes for the transmissions. The only wild card is what other little black boxes does the ecu connect to?

Just seems weird. If my ECM only runs the motor, and all the egr/smog stuff is gone including those sections of the harness, the #2 O2 sensors, and catalytic conv. You would think that all the basic sensors that run the motor (which is all I'm using the ecm for) would be interchangeable no matter if it's a cali model or not. I mean, all these ecms online say that they are for the 95-97 and none of them specify cali or fed. Only way im diagnosing them as cali models is by cross referencing a chart someone made on here a little while back. but damn if I'm gonna spend money on one and find out it doesn't work.

Well it will work - but not well. There has been people who try and it runs decent but some of the gauges stop working. Its a very sensitive system. Which is why most times when the CEL comes on - either Trac or OD stop working as well. If it works at all - it wont be very good. So the best bet is to not waste your money.

Since we're dealing with a swap here I doubt stock gauges, trac, ect functionally matters much. The main thing to make sure of is the pinouts are identical.

Well the pinouts arent. The smog pump from the valley of the block is pinned in the ECU as well as all the BS affiliated with it.

Yall are right about the non important systems like guages, trac, od, etc. All that stuff is gone. Bare bones 1UZ needing an ECM for fuel/ignition timing, crank/cam/knock sensors, #1 O2 sensor feedback and Throttle body feedback.
If the pinouts for the shared systems between the motors are different then that's the answer right there. BUT if the SHARED system pinouts are the same and the smog, egr, etc pin are different then we are good cuz I'm not even wired for those...

How about this. I can get a full standalone sent over from some friends in the UK as a full kit specifically designed for the 1uzfe for 750 I can get it to you. Comes with the new crank timing gear trigger and 2.5 BAR manifold air pressure sensor and all the drivers and junk you need.

That's sounds pretty legit. And I might go the route of a standalone soon. I plan on adding forced induction sometime next year. For now though, replacing it with a stock ecm is my best bang for the buck. Im zeroing in on a couple ecm's as we speak. You will be my go to guy should I choose to go stand alone. 750 ain't bad for that

Not at all lol considering I have used a piggyback that cost me more and it didnt work for crap and these folks run 1uz all the time and it even comes with a base map for the 1uz. Its that or wait for the very mucho special Haltech elite as a plug and play for the ls400 loom - but that is still being developed.

To use the LS400 or other model ecu, it is going to need all the inputs from all the stuff you say is not there.
That stuff reports to the ecu and the ecu corrects the parameters to make the engine run efficiently. You can not get rid of all the important sensors that the ecu was designed to work with.
The only way to go is a stand alone system. Look into Mega squirt as it is going to be the lest costly and the easiest to change parameters on. I'm sure there are other easier plug and play systems but they will be more costly.

Negative. Been running well like this for years. No catalytic coverters, no #2 O2 sensors, no egr or any other emissions/smog equipment on intake manifold.
