I'm a new owner of a 1998 LS 400 with 30 K miles- truly a wonderful car. I've really enjoyed reading the posts on this site, and I have a question.
Previously, I've owned V6's (Nissan Maxima) and even a four cylinder 1997 Toyota Camry. One thing I noticed is that when I start the Lexus in the morning (not a cold morning) the engine cranks for about 2 seconds before starting- after that, everything is fine. I'm not really used to this - the Maxima and even the Camry would start almost instantly. Is this normal, and this difference related to the size of the Lexus engine or its technology? Thanks for any advice.

During the 2 secs or so the computer is checking all the systems and setting the air/fuel mix, throttle opening, etc. After all this is complete the engine starts.
The post by RealMarty was a good one. You as well were on the mark with technology as a probable factor. Your previous cars had technology that the money you spent on them, quite frankly, buys. A new LS430 has approximately 43 computers on board and needs 23 of them to just drive down the road. Your car has an extreme amount of technoloy in it as well, and the contributing factors are checked starting with just turning your key on. Heck, for that 2 seconds or so that it takes to start the engine many of us are in love with that sound! It IS a charteristic with Lexus though, but I sure look forward to hearing that 2 seconds.
In my case, I did not notice any cranking delay with my car. On a few occasions, my wife refueled the car with lower grade fuel instead of the recommended premium 92-93, the car will make some short cranking sound on starting for 3-5 sec before it runs... As soon as I refuel the car with premium, the problem went away.
