Default Fuel Guage issues on 98+?!!!! (FIXED)

After noon gentlemen, I have recently developed dilemma here, and need your input.

I have a problem with my fuel gauge, it would give me strange registries every time I put my key in the ignition, and it would never register full, only 2/3's max when it feels like it.

NOW, I know its a common problem for the 90-94 LS's, but has anyone noticed this on a 98+?

I hope I dont have to change any caps, or such.

(Note: I first noticed this problem after parking it on a hill, with low gas).

Thanks guys.

I’m using the ODO for now.

By the way, I rested the ECU by pulling the fuse, nothing improved yet. Im going to let it play and flex around for a few more days, in hope of it being a glitch in the tank sensor.

In any event, im never goign to park to a steep driveway for a prolonged period of time with very low fuel ever again., so watch out guys.

This TSB on problems with the "miles since refuel" may be related to the problem you are having. It also can happen when the car is parked on a hill.

I had a near similar issue with my '97 a month or so back. I let the gas run down till the warning light came on. When I filled up, it only registered at 3/4 tank and this occured for the next 2 fill-up's. Then it just went back to normal.

I'd tank up a few more times and see if it goes away like mine. In any case, I gauged the miles I drove and when it reached 1/4 tank, it was spot on. My in-town mix I am getting gas at 1/4 when the trip meter reads about 250 miles.

Yeah, thanks, I looked into that, and its only the computer Miles since refill, not the fuel gauge. Do you think its the fuel sending unit? should i drop the tank? or just a gauge problem?

This problem isnt all common with the 95+.

The sending unit is removed from the trunk ...........the tank is in the trunk no droping needed........and when you are there it is a good time to install a kill switch on the fuel pump and hide the switch in a good location..........this is a better theft device that you stock system !

Sounds like a relay issue...may be a contact in the fuel sending unit or could be something up stream in the electronics as well an electronic component in the information display. I'd take it in.

Well much online research, I found out its a problem with the actual cluster. One guy wants to charge $290 to fix it. Anyone know where I can get a different Cluster? (i've searched Ebay already) Might be cheaper that way. Then I can open them up and exchange out the Fuel gauge Module or board.

That sucks. Hope you find a reasonable fix from a donor car.

I like the Lexus yet at the same time, I have a growing disappointment for the various issues these cars develop as they age. Worn suspension bushings, electronic gremlins, squeaks, rattles.

I've driven other less sophisticated Toyota's from a '68 Corona and stuff like this wasn't even a thought. Like Scotty said on one of the Star Trek films..."the more they tinker with the plumbing the easier it is to clog up the drain."

Thanks man, what was interestingly humorous is when my father drove my car today (I parked behind him, and blocking his car) while I was asleep. Therefore, he got into the car and was very afraid to see the gauge at that level (COMPLETELY EMPTY) so he said he drove VERY slowly to the nearest gas station and filled her up to the max for only $4. He was very confused at that point. I laughed hard when he told me the story, I still am.

Oh well, my search begins.

Anyone know how to remove the cluster? its a bit different from the 94's down.

Default Good News.

Well, my dealer quoted me $160+ for the fuel-sending unit, another said $118, and another said $125. (None of them stocked it, and needed a week for it to come in).

PM'ed Darrel at www.lexus-parts.com and he gave it to me for $83. Ordered Monday at 3PM, got it today (Thursday), plugged it in less then 10 mins, and my gauge is working once again. No more dreaded yellow Low fuel light and guess work about how much gas I have.

Thanks everyone for your help
