Power Steering problems
I need some Help.........I just got my '92 LS 400 this year, and I'm a novice at working on them. Recently, the steering column started squeaking, especially when cold. Now just today, the steering became very tight, as if there was very little power steering available.
during lunch, i'm going to check out the fluid level. But what else should i check ? what are common failure items ?
any help would be appreciated !
thanks, geoff

Power steering help
There is a tutorial on lexls about power steering.
He also references another guy who took it all the way apart......bla bla bla...
Check your fluids, keep the cylinder full - whatever it says hot or cold.
That's what could be the noises because it is under pressure and air does not help with the pressure lines an rack.
Also, steering fluid could be leaking on your alternator. Ask anyone they are not cheap.
Once they go, they're gone, and you'd have to do both the pump and the alternator for about a G a piece.
you can get the power steering hose between 100 and 400 dollars depending on where you go. Pumps are about 200 to 300, some will be rebuilt but ask for a warranty.
If you are really interested in doing it yourelf you will need to take apart the pump and the resevoir and clean them really well. Then use new hoses and parts, put it back together and you're done. But it does take time.
And it is not cheap for the "stealer' to do either. Unless you're rich and have the money.
BTW steering issues are common for the 1rst Gen LS400, and with any older car.
I am actually going to do this next on my 92.
hope this helps
