I have a 1991 LS400 with 90k. I have been thinking about selling it. I would like to know if I were to buy a 95-97 LS400 with around 80-90k will I have the same or better reliablity as my 91. What tends to go bad on the 2nd Gen?

They are just as reliable if not more but try stick with either a 96 or 97 since a 95 seems to be prone to more problems and isn't OBDII compatable.

As far as what tends to go bad, the normal things such as most bushings, struts etc. Most normal wear and tear items.

Basically, the difference is in the amount of smog equipment and sensors the ecu "looks" at for input. An OBD II is self correcting to improve emissions after driving. It constantly remaps it's own fuel curve based on sensor readings to minimize emissions based on driver input. Not to mention, it's also easier to diagnose a problem if or when there is one with the car.

i guess he was just assuming b/c most car companiesdidnt make cars obd2 until 96 when it became the law but lexus made all their cars obd2 in 95

The Gen 2 1995 LS400 is very much OBD II compliant. Lexus was 1 year ahead of the game.

95 is equally reliable as a 96 or 97.

OBD is NOT self correcting - it is simply a diagnostic tool.

I have a 95 LS400 that I bought a little over a year ago with 99k miles. I've put on like 15,000 miles since and they only problems I've had were minor.

1. Had to refill the A/C freon. ($60 to refill)

2. Pinhole leak in my powersteering fluid (I just remember to top it off every 2-3months)

3. Driver's side power door lock stopped working. ($500 to replace, dealer only part...so I'm just using my key now instead of the remote)

4. Heated seats never worked.

5. Lowbeam bulb went out. ($10)

Umm, that's it. But then again I did do a full major service on the car when I first bought it, including changing the sparkplugs, wires, waterpump, belt, and a host of other things that cost me $1,300. But all that was more preventative maintance, which I could have waited another year or two to have done. Over all I have been very satisified with the reliablity of my 95' LS400.
