Default Yes or no to Extended Warranty

I just bought a 2002 LS430 with 46,000 miles from a friend who has owned the car since new. The car has lots of electronics including the Navigation system, moonroof, and Mark Levinson sound system. Dealers want $ 2,675 for a 7 yr, 100,000 Platinum warranty. I must make a decision prior to my reaching 50,000. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on buying the LS430 and welcome to the Lexus family.

The LS430 is one of the best luxury sedans in the world.

It is built-quality. Did your friend do all of the proper maintenances?

As long as you do all of the regular services for your LS, I do not see why you need to buy an extended warranty.

But let's wait for others to reply. I think I saw this topic in www.edmunds.com
Go to "Forums" and then go to "Lexus"

Good luck.

Jerry G i bought the extended warranty for my LX470 and believe me it is well worth it. I already got my money back from a height sensor that cost 1800$. So it is really worth buying it gives you a piece of mind.

I asked the same question on this forum about 2 weeks ago but did not get any responce.

I am getting ready to purchase an extended warranty on a 1999 LS 400 with 50,500 Miles.

I will be taking the car for pre-warranty inspection as soon as i fix the bad radio LCD.

I was quoted $1500.00 For 3 Years by AAA and $1900.00 for 3 Years by Pinnacle through Lexus

I was not sure if i really need the portection but like you mentioned you have PEACE of MIND which is worth a lot these days.

Thanks

i'm a BIG believer in extended warranties. On my solara i've yet to use a pennys worth from the payment. On my camry...we have used the extended warrantry for small stuff (o2 sensor replacements, window regulator, valve gaskets)...but on my ES..thanks to the extended warranty we got a whole new tranny! I'd definately say go for it.

I posted a dealer I have used in the past for Toyota products and as I recall I think she said I could get a Genuine Toyota/Lexus Platinum Warranty 7/100 0 deductable for $1805. Your dealer is raping you.

Is it worth it for you to get the warranty? I would say yes considering you bought it used.

Did I get it? No, I didn't because I bought my 03 LS 430 new and didn't see the value. Anyway good luck.

Sounds like a good deal to me, cuz if you think about it, some of these parts can really cost you. You will get your money's worth. Something is bound to go wrong, even w/ Lexus quality.

See what http://www.warrantybynet.com/request.asp?m=1 quotes you and compare the coverage between the polices.

No Good. They do not cover 30K and above and 2001 or less

Exclamation

Bad Deal. The insurance company has an army of actuaries that have calculated the probability of the various things that can go wrong with the cars and then set the rates accordingly. When the rates are set they insure that the premiums collected will far exceed the repair costs. This is true with any type of insurance and as the saying goes; you can always be insurance poor. Take a look at any insurance company and see how many are not profitable; not many , if any.

Many people who buy extended policies on anything, washer, dryer, TV, auto, lawn mower, etc. are overjoyed when they need to use it but rarely look at what they have paid in the way of premiums. In most cases the premiums exceed the repair cost. Those devilish actuaries are right again.

The reason that your finance guy pushed the extended warranty is that he is paid a hefty commission on those sales. This is one of the dealer's highest margin products that a dealer can sell. This is not speculation but fact as explained to me by a close friend who is a dealer.

I hate to get on my soap box but having been in business for many years I have a fairly good prespective of the insurance mongers. In addition my son is a successful actuary and gives me the insiders point of view.

Unless you are extremely big hearted or a philanthropist and love to give away money, stay away from the extended warranty.

I got a bumper to bumper 7/100 $25 deductable warranty from Mercury Insurance for $850. The only thing that the Lexus policy covers and Mercury's doesn't is the radiator. Given that it would cost more than that to replace a bad A/C condenser, I think it is worth the protection.

Default Look into 1SourceAutoWarranty.com

I bought a 1999 LS400 a couple of years ago, with 78,000 km on the clock (about 47,000 miles). My wife insisted that I buy an extended warranty. After extensive research, decided on a 0-deductible warranty from 1SourceAutoWarranty.com which will take me to 100,000 miles. Price was reasonable, coverage *far* better than anyone else. Since then, I've only had to use the warranty a couple of times: bad direct ignitiion module for one of the cylinders (they paid mu Lexus dealer directly - no fuss, no muss, no bother); and a flat tire (damaged sidewall; had to replace the tire - they gave me US$100 towards the price of a new one). I'm very satisfied with them, but the car has been so reliable, I'm not sure I'll ever get "my money's worth" out of the warranty!

I have been asked where I got the price for Genuine Toyota/Lexus Care so here it is again. I am pretty sure I posted this before so sticky this or bump it because I don't read the boards as often as some of you.

Donna Kaoga

Toyota/Lexus Extra Care
LS430 only w/ $0 deductable:

Platinum level
7yr/100K- $1805
6yr/100K- $1635
6yr/70K- $1010

I didn't get it since I bought my care new. I may opt for it at near the 3 year mark. Although Lexus offers a 4 year warranty standard, I believe you have to by the extended one before the 3 year point or there is a surcharge. Anway, check with Donna. She can be hard to get a hold of so you may have to put some effort into it.
