Default 95LS check engine light

The car 1995LS400 w/ 124,000miles. Last tuesday, the check engine light came on. Tried to get the codes by connecting TE1 & E1 from the engine compartment with no luck. Found out wednesday afternoon that my 95 has a OBDII connector beside the DLC2. So went to a local shop to ask them to check the codes. They wanted $60US just to extract the codes. Heh, screw that, bought myself a OBDII scanner for $119US. I suggest you guys to buy this tool. Its easy to use and it will save you a lot of trip to the shop.

Received one code which is P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2. So it could be the catalytic converter or the O2 sensors on the passenger side. But theres a different code for the o2s, so could it be the cats? I dont want to waste the o2s if the cats is the prob. Search the forum and "additude" had the same problem. He replaced the cats under warranty for $2000. eek

I need some suggestion on what to do next. The car seems to have lost some power. thanx

Default OBD II scanner question

Would this scanner work on earlier 1st Gen. models(1991)?
If not is there one for the 1st Gen,'s?
Any info would help...

No, this scanner will not work on a 91.
You need an OBDII plug (On Board Diagnostics plug) which your car doesn't have.

If you have a good scanner, I would watch the wave form before and after the cat. That way you will be sure the cat is out.

Just posting an update.

I solved the check engine light problem 2 weeks ago. Yeah I know, Ive been busy for the last 1 1/2 months, didnt really have the time to really diagnose the problem. Well anyways I looked under the car to check the passenger side cat, found out that the gasket after the catalytic was chipped and developed a gap between the catalytic and the pipe causing an exhaust leak, sending a P0430 code. I plugged it with an exhaust cement sealer , cleared the code, drove it for two weeks and the check engine light never came back

And thanks JPI for the idea but i dont think my scanner has that feature.
