Im looking to buy an LS400 to replace my Toyota LAndcruiser. I have found that i like the 95 and up models ALOT better than the first generation ones, and i have found a few of them that i would be willing to buy, but they usually have 170,000 miles or so.... this aint that big of a deal is it? i know that Lexus's are built to perfection standards, even better than Toyotas (the only brand i will ever buy) it doesnt seam like it would be a biggie to me. even then, LSs are plentiful and there plenty of spare parts laying around as i see it, who cares what the mileage is?

The mileage is quite high even for a Lexus. I would buy it IF you know it has been taken care of externally and internally. If it has been neglected at all, I would stay far away.

Well I hope people will buy cars with this many miles on them since I sold my 90 LS last November after driving it nearly 185,000 miles. Look for a complete service history and verify that everything works. My 90 LS looked and drove like new but, like any older car, things were wearing out and had to be replaced. Unfortunately, not everyone keeps on top of the situation like I did so some older LS cars can need quite a bit of work.

I would think that you could find a fairly low mileage 95 or up if you looked a bit. I bought a 2000 LS in November and found a lot of 98-00 LS400's in the 30K - 75K mileage range. The one I bought had just come off a 3 year/36,000 mile lease.

I can't speak for the LS's, but a properly maintained and serviced, high mileage ES can be sold in a matter of time by the dealership. I traded in my 1996 ES300 with all services done (including the 90K) and 128,500 miles last year at a used car dealership, and I found out that dealership sold the ES in only less than 2 months.

While high mileage definitely lowers the true value of a car, its service/maintenance history is another story itself, so caveat emptor

Ditto on what others have said. Obtaining the service history is critical in considering a higher miles car. There are plenty of 95-97's with mileage at 60K in ~$24K range. I'd suggest one closer to the 100K mark budget permitting.

A better question would be: Would I be crazy to buy with 225,000? I was crazy enough to do it! The private owner had no proof of regular maint. or anything, but I drove the car, and it was simply perfect. I knew it was maintained because of the way it drove! I'd say go for the 170k LS. I plan on driving my car until atleast 400k!

Crazy? Well, as others have said, it depends on the maintenance. It's amazing what these cars will do. Even without great care they'll run, and with great care I think they'll run hundreds of thousands of miles. There was an article in Lexus magazine featuring a 1990 LS owner with 550,000+ miles on his LS !!! I swear my 91 LS runs better than many NEW cars.

170k is nothing for an LS, it seems a little high for a second gen LS, but of course, that depends on how it was cared for. I've got 138k+ on my '91 and it's still going strong . I'll probably keep it until it dies and that will be many years down the road .

I was thinking that about my 95 w/ 226k, but it only comes out to 25k miles a year which really isn't that bad. My car runs like a dream, and the tranny performs like new. With the exception of a few large carpet stains, the car is in excellent shape!

I have 238k on my 1990 LS400 and it runs like a top. I say go for it!!!!

I also say go for it, just go in mentally prepared to replace a few things, fix a few other things, etc etc.

have your mechanic do a compression test on her, to make sure shes firing strong on all 8cylinders.

I know someone that has a 95LS with about 140k on it, and he beats on the car like its a stepchild. It has never given him a moments trouble

From a personal standpoint, I recently purchased a 93 with 165K miles. It had complete service records. All work was done via Lexus and the owner of the car was a sales rep for Lexus as well.

The car runs great, only prob now it the TPS which I am going to change out soon.

I got mine with 177k 1 year ago and replaced tyres, headlamps bulbs, fog lamp bulbs, all tail bulbs, wheel alignment, wipers blades, several oil changes, air filter and sparkplugs, rear shocks. The engine and transmissions were and are perfect. I paid $3400 for mine, and pumped another $2k perfecting it. It runs like new (better than it ever has), and I have put 40k miles on it. I think I got my money's worth. Gen 1 is best looking and easiest to work on.Only thing is A/C and traction control don't work on mine, but who cares when the car can sing and dance.

go for it my 1994 LS had 127,000 miles when i sold it and it drove like a brand new car but i suggest you ask for some kind of service history paperwork on the vechile good luck in your purchase !!!
