I think there was a UK car magazine that measured the average "over reading" of speedos in brand new cars, and it was about 4-5%, even in prestige brands. Assuming a particular LS is optimistic at 10%, you would have to be driving at an indicated 170mph to hit the fuel cut off for 155mph. Given the 149mph restriction in US models, you might be able to go up to an indicated 165mph before fuel cut off.

Horta, this might explain why your model was still accelerating at an indicated 153mph.

Food for thought!

I don't know if the gadgets are available in the US, but there are several GPS linked speed camera detectors in the UK that sit on your dashboard and tell you your true MPH versus the speed limit for the road you are on.
Hey I agree 100% on Speedo error. I have read sooo many car review when the do top speed. The Speedo will say 185mph but the vehicle speed radar will say 171mph wich is the "real" top speed. Thats why I way it "Indicated" 153mph, I have no idea how fast I was really going. At the same time weather it was 138 or 153 it was fast as hech and one awsome time. The other cool thing is just seeing the needle that far over on the dial. The world was flashing by pretty fast. I just wish I would have held it down a little longer, I wanted to hit the fuel cut off if there is one. At the same time I let off at 153mph and in slowing down I got clock by the Police doing 112mph. How fast would she have clocked me if I held the gas down for another 30seconds or so, probably 120+mph. I would have gone to jail !!!!

LS400s are strange vehicles. I only get about 16-18mpg in stop start traffic, yet onetime when I set the car to cruise control at 120mph for about 100 miles, I managed to get 19mpg.

Calculation uses Imperial gallons which are about 20% smaller than US gallons.

Must be all the aerodynamics at high speeds coming into play.

Have managed to take the car to an indicated 155mph a few times, but each time I had to move out of the way for a chipped Supra or something similar who flew past me up to about 170ish I think. It's a dog eat dog world out there.

I got my LS up to 145 when I was killing a new maxima, the car still had alot of pull left but by the time I got to 145 I had already proved my point that my car was faster. BTW I only did it because the guy wouldn't leave me alone. I didn't know the 2000 LS was this fast.

Sorry to dissapoint but 135 is my quickest... obviously FAR from max velocity... just that Houston has gotten VERY crowded and as pointed out by many already... this is "go to jail" speed. Arguably with good reason. At these speed a car can litterally FLY. Yes, FLY. Nascar has pop up vents in the roof so when those cars loose control and slide sideways they do not FLY off the track. A car turned sideways becomes a wing with the air going over the top accelerating faster than the air going under it... presto... a flying car. Even if you do not get sideways a car out of control (flat tire, trash in road, stray animal, other cars pulling in front of you, suspension/steering failure, bearing failure, brake failure, etc, etc) can cross into oncomming traffic. It is one thing to endanger our own lives, quite another to do so to others.

Regarding speed limiters: as far as I have read (not tested myself) there were no electronic speed limiters at least through 1996 (can't say for euro models). Car & Driver rated the 1990 at 150mph, 1996 at 156mph and 1998 -2000 with a limiter at 149mph (speedo error aside). The 2001+ LS430s are limited to something lik 130mph (need to go back and check but this is very close).

What part of Houston do you live in? 59 is a great place to speed, if you make some cuts. And I've heard, I dunno if its true or not, but if you're speeding on an interstate in the middle of no where (lets say going 130) and you get pulled over you dont go to jail. I've heard the jail rule only applies in cities. Once you're on an empty interstate say I-45 connecting Houston to Dallas, if you get pulled over for major speeding you just get a ticket. Can anyone confrim this or does it just depend on the cop?
