With reference to the EGR pipe going from the top of the right exhaust header(before cat.) to the back of the intake manifold: has anyone here either replaced it, seen it done, or talked to someone who did???????

I do have a leak in mine[ in the expansion bellows, that is in the horizontal portion behind the engine]. Have known for a while--but was 'hoping' it would go away.
It is obvious when the engine is cold but seems to go away when it warms up. This is contrary to manual that says the EGR valve is closed below 157 degrees and open above 157 SINCE it also says it is CLOSED at idle. Why would the noise reduce if the valve is still closed at idle after it warms up !!? Anyway, that is not the issue.

I would like to replace the pipe myself[I have a Autolifter and can raise the car about 7' off the floor--so I have access] . Do you have to drop the transmission or pull the engine--heaven forbid !!!!?

Need to know if you can rotate the pipe to get it out[it looks very tight w/ the bends at the top]; also, does it come out the top or bottom; do you have to remove the right cat. if it comes out the bottom. Does the intake need to come off

I had the same problem with my EGR. I'm sorry to say yes you have to drop the tranny.
My mechanic did mine for me, I didn't have my car for 3 days.

Coupe--did you also have to drop the transmission?????

Anyone do it without dropping the tranny??

No he didn't drop his tranny. He had his starter replaced, at the same time he did his EGR since it was clearly visible from the top with every thing off. Just in case you don't know the starter sits on top the engine in the back by the firewall underneath the air intake. That's the only other way to get to the EGR, both time comsuming.

Then I understand that there are 2 ways to change it: 1) drop the tranny 2) pull the intake

Think I would rather pull the intake if these are only options.

Yes, I do have the 2 shop manuals--wouldn't touch anything without them !!!!!

Just curious ....... does the pipe "break" due to corrosion (internal or external) or does it fail due to vibration fatigue?

And .... is it one of those inevitable repair items?

Just about every LS has this problem. The pipe works under very high temps. It is also exposed to constant vibrations from the engine. My mechanic looked at it and said that he could probably change it with out dropping the tranny, IF the two bolts that hold the pipe to the exhaust don't break during removal. However, there is a very good chance that they will break, since they are also exposed to high temps and corrosion.
BTW, it is much easier to drop the tranny than to remove intake, and cheaper too.

This usually happends around 100K miles, so, 98LS, your pimpin' ride is good for another 60K, no problem.

My Lexus mechanics charged me 4 hours to replace the EGR pipe last year. I believe that he didn't remove the intake.

For a 94 LS this is part #25601-50010
EGR Pipe Assy.

Sooner must be a very able mechanic. In an old post he said that he can usually install this part in 30 minutes or so. Obviously without dropping the tranny or removing the intake. I think the key is to remove the catalytic converter on the right side of the engine where these parts are located. Rice has some very valid points about the condition of the bolts surrounding this area. due to extreme heat.

I need to replace my cracked EGR Pipe and also need new motor mounts. My guess is that I should take care of the mounts before ( or during ) the Pipe replacement or it is likely to break again.
