Question EGR malfunction

My brothers lexus recieved an error code 71 which is a EGR malfunction, its a 1990ls with 160K, im wondering if there is anything I can check before we take it to the shop, he has been driving it for a while with the check engine light on, and he is getting 250 - 300 miles per tank, I am wondering if there is a valve I can clean or something to see if I can get the light to turn off without spending big bucks.... if anyone knows anything I could check, could they point out WHERE is on the engine?

Im just looking for things i can troubleshoot myself that would cause the car to throw an egr malfunction code.... could I open up the modulator and clean it or something?

This probably won't help with your error code but it's something to check: http://www.pearsonimaging.com/LS/egrfilter.html.

Here are the correct emission control components:

I'm not sure what VSV and VCV stand for yet so if someone knows please say.

AHA, I cleaned that little filter, it was pretty bad, but after some driving, the check engine light went off! Can you buy a new filter thing at autozone or something? Here is what mine looked like...

Where exactly did you find this filter? I did not know that the EGR had a filter?? You learn something new everyday.

Try disconnecting your battery for a few minutes. This will clear the error codes from the computer.
