Disable telescopic steering wheel tilt-away feature?
Is it possible to disable the telescopic steering wheel tilt-away feature on a 1995 LS400? I would rather not have the steering wheel move every time I insert/remove the key. I believe the 1st generation LS had a switch to enable/disable the feature and I think the LS430 can enabled/disable it thru the computer interface. Any ideas on the 2nd generation LS400?

cmotomn ............
Just curious .......... why?
I love that feature ........ it makes it so much easier to get in and out?
Also .......... can you "store" the retracted position in your seat memory so it stays put?

cmotomn, I know on my 99 GS400 it's a c-best setting. In other words, the dealer has to do it with one of their diagnostic tools... but it's very quick and easy for 'em to do. Most dealerships won't even charge you to do it.
98 LS, he probably wants to disable it because it's just one more moving part to break at some point down the road. Probably won't happen for a looooong time... but you can bet that if the steering wheel moves twice for each trip you make for many years, it's eventually going to freeze up... I've already heard of it happening on a few Lexus vehicles.

I did not know that the 2nd generations did not have a cut-off switch. Strange that they would remove that feature. My 90 LS has the switch. I used to leave it on, but realized that I could get in and out without the steering wheel going up. My car does not have the power telescope however. That is manual. Only the tilt on my car is power.
On your car- have you looked to see if a fuse controls only this? Perhaps this may be your solution, but if it is on the same circuit with other features- that would create problems.

Auto Tilt Motor On/Off
In December 2006 I purchased a new used mint 2000 LS400 with only 75000 miles on it. I too would like to know how to disable the automatic tilt-away feature. I am a real estate agent and I show many homes. Sometimes I show 15-20 homes in a single day. I like the auto tilt-away feature, however comma, can you imagine how quickly I'm going to burn up the tilt motor?!!! My first two LS400's were a 90 then 92 and I simply pushed the off button. That's not an option now. Help!

I agree it is easier to add a switch to the pin on the cylinder as it is activated by the ignition tumbler.
Also the motor never seems to burn out what happens is the cogs on the motor snap off causing it to no longer adjust. This is caused by excessive pulling on the wheel . Such as entry /exit and using the wheel to adjust yourself in the seat causing strain on the cogs.

The serious issues that caused 98-00 LS400 auto tilt-away to make noise and fail were corrected at no cost during the basic warranty period and involved replacing both motors and some related parts. The TSIB, dated May 19, 2000, can be viewed at http://www.bedlib.org/ebsco.html by selecting the ARRC link.
The problem was corrected sometime in the 2000 model year. If your 2000 LS400 is one of the later ones, like mine, the revised parts were installed at the factory. The VIN numbers of the cars with the problem are in the ARRC link mentioned above.
I left the auto tilt-away feature on all the time on my 90 LS400 for almost 14 years and 183,000 miles and never had a problem with it.

35? Really?
Does anyone know where there's a list of all the features that can be programmed?
Turning the "auto tilt-away" feature off or on is one of the 35 electrical functions that can be customized on the 98-00 LS400 with a Lexus handheld scan tool. It takes only a few minutes. The dealer or repair shop has to have to correct program card for the scan tool to access all 35 functions.

Thanks!
Thanks for the link, mine's in the shop for timing belt/water pump etc. so I'm getting them to disable the tilt/return feature and the AUTO ON for the air compressor. As much as I love the gee whiz factor of the tilt/telescope auto return feature mine makes a little groan at the end of it's travel, so I'm quitting while I'm ahead.
