Frustrating: please advise if possible
Hello,
I've just purchased a 98 LS400 w/ Nav--94k miles. The car has full service records and is in excellent shape overall.
I'm not sure however, if it's just me, but there's a weird vibration coming from the car. At around 30 mph, the front center armrest has a strange vibration, kind of like a wheel being off balance, etc. And at 70-80, the car has unusual vibrations going through it, even if I'm driving through smooth highway.
Also, when I hit a pothole w/ my front right wheel, while making a left turn, the front right will make a metal to metal sounding clunk.
I took the wheels/tires to a shop to have it balance and shaved... it improved the feeling at 70-80... so it's pretty solid now, but the 30 mph vibration is still there.
I had the car inspected and Lexus said everything checked out fine and my local non-lexus specialized mechanic also said that everything seems OK w/ the car.
I suppose it's because I don't know if this is normal for it. But it seems to me that a car of this class should have a smooth drivetrain/susp. when going over smooth pavement.
Anyway, are there any suggestions I could try OR perhaps even better yet, an independent Lexus Mech. in the Los Angeles/Orange County area who can take the time to try and diagnose this w/o charging an arm/leg?
Thanks in advance for your time, I look forward to solving this issue and start really enjoying the car!

This is pretty common and it is typically the strut bars and/or the upper control arm, may want to have those checked.
The vibration...
