Fixed it!! It was the cable attached to the valve that controls the coolant flow into the heater core (the piece under the hood, near the firewall). The cable came off. Reattached it in a matter of 1 second and heat works like a dream.
Thanks to this forum for providing the answers - was up all night reading everything related to heat issues.
