I got off from work yesterday and at the first stop light I heard squeaking-grinding noise but wasn't sure if it was coming from my car or the adjacent car. I pulled to the nearest parking lot and proceeded to inspect and sure enough it was from my engine compartment, but it was too dark to see anything substantial. I comtemplated on whether to tow or drive her home, but I decided to drive her home while carefully monitored the instrument panel for any unusual signs. The drive home felt like an eternity. She made it to the freeway exit and at the first stop light near my place I saw smoke in front of my car and looked down at the instrument panel but nothing was out of the ordinary, then I felt the engine hesitated and heard a snap after which practically all warning lights came on. I immediately knew something had locked up (water pump?) causing a belt (timing?)to snap, but the engine was still running. Anyway, I managed to drive her home safely.

Postmorten?
Preliminary inspection indicated that the water pump was frozen causing the serpentine belt to snap. Unlike many Toyota engines, the water pump wasn't driven by the timing belt. Unfortunately, I don't have the space to work on her until my brand new home is completed. She will be decommissioned until then.

Stats: 91LS @ 147K

o yea.. those should have been changed man. sorry to hear that, sounds like it just needs a full 100k service, and then it should be working as good as new

Did the temperature guage ever show the car was hot?

Not sure what to make of your remark but yes I still stand by my statements. If it make you feel any better "screw the mods" doesn't mean screw the RODD"MOD"!

The temperature gauge didn't budge at all. It turned out that the water pump wasn't the problem.

and by the way, i, too, am not for modifications. As hyper said, a car should be maintained the way it was meant to. Keeping it all original is the beauty (at least in my opinion).

My 94 has 147,000 miles an original water pump & timing belt. I was hoping to make to 160,000 before having the major service done. Since this model year in a non-interference engine I think I will soldier on a little while longer.

But it may be a good idea for me to have hte parts ready to go. AAA stands at the ready!

The radiator fan pulley froze. Looks like the bearing was shot. Dealer wanted $205 for the fan bracket. I will see if I could replace just the bearing when I have space to work on the car.

Hopefully you can just replace the bearing, that would be inexpensive. Sounds like it wont be out of commission long.

And I agree, maintain original condition of these cars.
