I just read about problems with LS500. It is crazy that a car with a such high price tag has such issues: engine, wheel bearings, interior parts issues etc.

I really don’t know much about the LS500, except that when it first came out I thought it looked like a Nissan Maxima on steroids. And I hated the interior. But honestly, I’m starting to see a few here and there on the roads and they look a little better in person. A little.
I’m curious to see what they do, part of me thinks they’ll just chalk it up as...the sedan market is dead, move on to SUV’s and pickup trucks. 🤣 That would be a great excuse...not our fault...market has changed. But they clearly have dropped the ball. Tough spot to be in - their bread and butter was build a sedan that was comfortable, quiet, big and legendary in reliability/durability - and even that segment has disappeared. No one cares. People will lease it or trade it in three years later anyway. And that left them with trying to BMW it, or Mercedes them...and they failed. Mercedes has the S-Class figured out, they corned that market. Meanwhile Lexus makes a Nissan Maxima.

I don't think the 7 Series BMW is considered a disaster at all. Its the second best selling car in its segment, stacks up in comparisons very well and is a very appealing car, I very nearly almost got one over the S Class, and I would have had cars optioned like I wanted been readily available.

I could change my oil in 20 minutes from start to finish and it cost me about 40 bucks.
I could bring it to the dealer, wait 2 hrs and get pressed on stuff that want to sell me there nor needed and pay double the price.... No thanks!
Very enjoyable thread!!!
MMade22, if I ever made my way to North Carolina -- the 1-owner-before-me 2013 L that I purchased was originally sold by, and serviced at, Hendrick -- would you be willing to teach me a thing or two about maintaining/"operating on" my vehicle? I'm mesmerized by some of the tear-down images, and efforts.
I'll generalize this a bit to those in, or closer to, Massachusetts - anyone willing to guide me a bit in-person/on-site on maintaining my vehicle?
I love DIY stuff; I've done some on other cars; and I'm reasonably smart, and handy. But, in general, people in this section of CL take things to another level. And, if/when I have the need, I'd like to be able to at least realistically consider whether I'd want to engage something involving.
PMs are fine with me on this, as I don't want to take this thread off topic; although, I believe my post is relevant to the general spirit of this thread.

I've been on a similar car model journey the past 14 years. Started with an ES300, RX330, ES, LS, ESh, ES, Mercedes E350, Mercedes GLK and back to an LS. Mercedes are nice cars with great options and engineering, but more expensive to maintain. My current LS460 hasn't needed more than tires, brakes and fluids. I'm alone in my car and don't drive much as I'm retired. But an LS is hard to beat for comfort and dependability. If I relocate to FL from CA, I'll get an RX so I can tow a small boat and fish my Golden Years away. The LS is perfect for the cross county drive.
Do you wash your own car too ? I still do.....but then I am old school. And yes, I cut my own grass.....and yes, I clean and maintain my own pool...and, yes, I still climb my palm trees to trim them
mmade22 is very much like myself. I will do everything possible myself before I take my car into the Lexus dealer or any other mechanic shop. After reading thru this thread, I can see that mmade22 is very mechanically inclined and can take on most automotive tasks. So oil changes are a no-brainer for most here in this forum, but it seems most people who buy an expensive car like an LS460 would take their cars in for service. Even the basics...

Right! All this grass talk, I didn't know if we were cutting it or smoking it!
And not to totally derail this thread, but this guy’s thread and his other (GS350) threads are the best on this site. IMO. And if you haven’t checked them out you need to. He cranked out something like 300,000 plus miles on his GS and documented his maintenance, mods and repairs much of the way. The guy was driving 60,000 miles a year!!
I think he also started a similar thread on the LS500 board, but it sounded like he was having issues with the car...not sure if he still has it...I’ll have to check out that thread, but it would be AWESOME if he tried logging 300,000 miles in a LS500.

My man Doublebase! How the tell are you brother? You're correct, that GS had 340,000 miles on it before I sold it and it's the one I should have never gotten rid of! Hope all is well with you!
Well the LS500 WAS A TRUE 🍋! I had it for about 4 months, put about 15-17k miles on it and it had so many issues, I couldn't believe it had a Lexus badge on the front.
The car with it's lack of a spare tire, run-flat tires, awful lag when needing power and the transmission shutter that they couldn't fix......I WAS DONE!
They had an engineer fly into my dealer and work on my car for two full days and came out stating they have replicated the problem but there is no fix at this time. I was getting a shutter on up hlls and under a light load creating the car to shake. It was always happening in my wheel house speed 75-85..... Where I sit at all day, every day.
I worked with my dealer on getting out of the car and getting into something else. While my car was in for service, I got very familiar with the ES300h and that car grew on me. It drove better than the LS, had a bigger trunk, had a spare, had plenty of highway power and road like a Lexus should thanks to normal tires.
Well, I made the deal and exchanged the LS for a brand new 21 ES300h Ultra Luxury with every single option you can get. I walked out of the dealer with a brand new car and a check for the difference. Don't get me wrong, I lost some money because of the tint, ceramic coating, etc but at least I was out of that car.
Lexus has a LONG WAY before that LS500 is a good car.
The day I got the car........
I told the dealer don't do anything to the car and leave everything in the car as it is when it comes off the truck. I wanted to do the first wash as I was going to prep it and ceramic coat the entire car inside and out. Before I did the ceramic, I drove it to my old guy and he did the full ppf and also tinted the windows at 20% along with 50% on the windshield.
Ceramic coated the entire underside, engine, wheels, wheel wells and interior.
That was exactly a year ago and I've been driving the hell out of this thing for the past 53,000 mikes without one single issue! What an amazing car and I've saved a ton if money this year on fuel and maintenance is next to nothing on this thing. Changed the oil every 2 months 10,000 mikes and rotated the three along with general filter changes.
The entire plan when I decided to purchase this car was to eventually pass it over to my 21 year old son who is finishing up college this year and has also been working for me for the past 5 years saving his hard earned money to purchase it.
Well, it's come time to pass the keys over to him at the end of this month. It's a great car and it will serve him well as his new daily.
He's been running around in his pristine 2004 G35 that's been in our family from day one. That's now going to be his weekend runner. He's shown me he takes care of his cars and because he's also a technician by trade working with me, he knows how to work on his own cars!
So the story ends here with my Lexus ownership….. I’ve been a loyal owner of these cars for the past 15 years. Most of have been excellent cars but that LS500 sure was a huge disappointment! I’m glad my son will be safe in this car and he will get many many years of use out of it.
I've been bitten hard by the Porsche bug and I’ve officially converted all my cars over to the brand. I have purchased a 2016 Cayenne Diesel and all I can say is what a fantastic SUV! It’s better than my 2016 Cayenne turbo was and it’s officially my new DD. Got it from a one owner with 56k on the odometer back in December of last year. I haven’t driven it much because I knew I was passing this ES300h off to my son but needed to drive it before I could do so.
I currently have that as my DD and I upgraded the 911base to a heavily optioned 911S in the correct color.
The wife is no longer driving the Cayenne so I purchased a 2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo for her DD.
So this is my last Lexus for a while and I'm not sure I'll be back in the brand as Porsche has truly made a believer out of their engineering and reliability!
Take care everyone and keep those Lexus cars going!

Mmade22, best of luck to you! If you ever start a Porsche longevity thread, post a link here, I’d love to follow it. You have the best high mileage threads on the internet...try to talk your son into starting a thread on his IS300! Beautiful car. Godspeed.

Ugh you guys and your garages. We have one that gets the job done, but it's small and in no way could ever be a "cool" garage in that way with all the backdrops and space and lighting, etc. Lookin good guys!!!

Seems like the natural progression from Lexus for those with money is to a brand like Porsche, Lamborghini, ETC! For now I'll be sticking with my Toyotas and Lexus cars, as I can't afford a low mileage German that'll last like a lexus!

Lease German cars. We may lease one someday. I’ll never buy a new car but I would lease one.
