Next-Gen Lexus LS Rumored to Drop V8
#61
If they're going to go V6 TT, make it a little exotic.. say 8,000 rpm redline and making power all the way there... push power to 515 instead of 415.. put true dual exhaust on it but tune to sound more like a V8.

A V6 cannot be tuned to sound like a V8. Similar, but not the same. It's all about 4th order noise, it just sounds GOOD. The challenge of "good" sound is reduced in a luxury application, where the engine is made as quiet as possible. I sometimes wish the
LS460 had a louder exhaust, but that's what the IS-F is all about. Speaking of that, listen to the awesome 4th order "bobobobobobob" noise at the beginning of this video:
There is an element of smoothness that comes with higher cylinder count. In a V12, the power pulses/firing events are 60 crank degrees apart. In a V8, 90 degrees apart. In a 6, they are 120 degrees apart, and in a 4, 180 degrees apart. More cylinders reduce the "lull" between firing events, making the power delivery feel smoother. The challenge with engine downsizing (where cylinder count is being reduced) is to isolate noise and vibration as well as dampen the wider spacing of firing events via heavier flywheels or looser torque converters. But those create side effects of their own.

I wouldn't 100% trust the dealer...

It would be odd for the LC to have a 5.0L V8 and Lexus not put it in the LS. The LC has the V6 in the hybrid option...so I wouldn't be surprised to see that in the LS hybrid. And to roadfrog's point, I put no faith in what dealers tell me. With few exceptions, I am often the one educating them on the car they are trying to sell me.

Even if it is true, shouldn't we wait to test it before we say we don't like it? Who knows, maybe Lexus can pull it off with V6.

I hate to sidetrack the thread, but perhaps we haven't met? Hello, my name is Jason Oliver. And I have developed the least expensive, most effective solution to make YOUR WISH come true! If you don't believe me, ask a credible source ... roadfrog (and others).
If you have questions / comments, see the link(s) in my signature below. Ask me via PM, etc. So any further sidetracking of the thread may be avoided. I just gave a "limo" ride to 2 new buddies at my new company ... again with very positive comments on the exhaust tone.

Thats like saying "I prefer broccoli to peas" and you saying "How can you say that until you've had these peas". Sorry...I just don't like peas...regardless of how they're made.
To me this is further evidence of Lexus just totally losing track of what made them successful (assuming its true)...I mean...even Hyundai gets it and has a V8 option in the G90 as small a sales category as that car will be. If Lexus drops the V8, they are simply ceding that they are no longer a tier 1 flagship brand, because EVERY other flagship car has an available V8...except lower rung cars like the CT6...thus the LS will also become a lower rung car.
I'm not going to buy a 4cyl E300 and I'm not going to buy a V6 LS350. I'm certainly not going to pay MORE for a new V6 LS than I paid for my V8 LS460. If I'm going to pay $85-90k for a V6 flagship car its going to be a 740.

I wouldn't be so sure, they were in Tokyo when they unveiled the LS and the LC. I will have to wait and see how the 6 cylinder turbo performs, but it's kind of a deal breaker for me. I don't consider it a flagship vehicle with a 6 cylinder engine.

That's what doomed the RL imo. It's hard to call it a "flagship" just because it's the most expensive, but only has a V6 under the hood.
In any case, hopefully we'll find out soon enough.

If they are putting a V6 in the LS it is only going to be because of fuel economy and emissions. They are not going to do anything exotic to it or pushing the power envelope because that will just kill any fuel economy advantage it is going to provide over the current V8. I would not expect anymore or much more then 400hp if they do a V6 and it may even get less then that.
