Default Rust!!

Yikes

So I finally got around to addressing the rust that has bubbled up on my passenger side, rear wheel well. I found a local shop that'll weld new metal in place AND guarantee the work. The guarantee is that the rust will not return. It's the only shop in town that does this stuff. This shop is well known, and does lots of custom work, hot rods, classics, etc. His shop is on an acreage and is done up like a 1950s service station...jukebox, collectibles, old gas pumps etc. Pretty cool.

Anyway, the job will cost 750 bucks, but he's backed up for two weeks. I'll post photos afterwards when it's done. It goes in on the 11th.

This car was bought and registered by the previous owner in Ontario....a salt belt of Canada. In fact my part of Canada is the only part that is mild with little to no snow or cold weather. Unfortunately, it only took that initial year or two in Ontario to lay the seed for rust. The rest of the car is rust free and clean.

Wow, guess I'm lucky in that I live in a salt-free area. Pretty amazing how quickly corrosion can take hold.

Curious what people do to keep that at bay? Constant undercarriage rinsing?

In any case, I'm sure it will work out fine.

Oh, Man, that is some deep rust. Which year is your 460? Do you have the rust when you bought it? You must have some deep discount if you bought the car with rust already.

$750 is a good price to fix rust like that. 2011 I bought a 2006 LS430 from Lexus of Wayzata in MN, after half year, drive rear panel all the sudden had lots of bubble on the edge. It turns out to be a bad previously repaint job. the dealer reimburse me the fix ($500) after I complained to them. That $500 doesn't include welding a new piece of metal.

I feel Japanese cars don't have a good paint job. My 1991 Honda accord, 1995 Nissan maxima, 2000 Infiniti l30t, 2006 Lexus LS430, 2010 Lexus Rx350, 2011 LS460 all have rust issue to be addressed, but my 2004 Volvo XC70, 2008 Volvo XC70 never have any rust to worry about even though I ran them through 15miles gravel road to our cottage. I was told metal on European car are galvanized so that they are more rust proof.

I bought my 2011 460 in Ontario this May. I checked 6 of 2010-11 pre-owned. All of them have some rust

I was told by dealer that the hood of LS460 is made of aluminum, that is why it is so light?

Wow that's some rust! They must saturate the roads in Ontario. I remember your thread on your rotted out mufflers, that was some serious corrosion. You even posted some pictures on a differential fluid change and I couldn't help but notice that you had a pretty good amount of rust on the diff and rear subframe.

I live in a rust belt myself, luckily the car has only spent four of it's nine years there. I take extreme measures to keep the salt off it, but I realize nothing survives the rust where I live. I'll wash my undercarriage once or twice a week during the winter, and I spray every piece of metal under there with Fluid Film (don't know if it helps, but it's worth a shot). I also think if you must drive in a rust belt, the best thing to do is actually drive - and drive a lot - it's better than driving and then letting it sit for days. Driving at least will give you the chance to let it get wet, then get the moisture blown off by driving. Parking in a dirt driveway or on grass is also probably the worst thing you can do.

It's a 2008. The rust is right through. It has been bubbling up for the last 18 months or so. Initially, my intention was to hammer out the rust, treat it, and fill it. Then have a shop paint over it. However, once I started to hammer away the bubbles, it was clear that this was a job for the pros. I did get a discount when I bought the car. In Canada, it's required to declare a car that was registered in another province. That's important for us in BC, as we are the "California of Canada". I live an hour or two from Seattle, so that gives you an idea on our climate. Cars just don't rust here.

Rust gives me headache.

Ontario is not too cold, so they use liquid salt a lot. Manitoba is more cold and liquid salt doesn't work very well, so we use sands a lot.

My 2010 RX350 has some little rust on the bottom edge of the tailgate. I will post some pic tomorrow.

I am not sure if I should use
metallic fallout remover(like a acid rust remover) to treat it and spray paint it
or
sand it down before I spray paint it?

Wow, that's some serious rust. Sorry to hear that. Good luck with the fix.

Modern cars including Lexus uses corrosion prevention paints. Still maintenance is very important. Prevention is better than cure. During winter times frequent car washes and more importantly a nice sealant/wax before winter goes long way in preventing rust.

Good post on the same subject: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/mai...rust-away.html

Not directly related to OP's topic but I found this to be a good read : http://www.lexus-int.com/magazine/issue4/lab/

When I open the tailgate. the rust is on the bottom edge. What is the best way to remove the rust besides repainting the whole door? Can I sand it down and spay rust paint?

Yes. I would sand down to metal, then apply a rust proofing primer. I had a similar rust spot on my Cobra, and that's what I did. That kind of rust is easy to deal with and arrest. After the primer...a little touch-up paint to match and your good.

I use Lexus touch up pen or dupli colour pen. Why clear coat always take away the paint I applied 7 hours ago?
