ML Subwoofer Repair/Replace
I noticed this morning there was a rattling sound coming from the back seat when I turned the music up. When I got to work I climbed in the back and realized the rear center speaker sounds blown. After lots of searching I found two general options, repair or replace. To replace it I know I have to remove the back seats, but is there a way to just look at it without doing all of that? Can I just take the cover off to be able to inspect the cone from the backseat?
Also, if I do have to replace it (and go OEM), how much do you have to baby the subwoofer? It seems like they are very poorly made which is unfortunate for what otherwise seems like an amazing sound system.

It looks like the cover does pop right out but I've actually never tried to remove it.
If you do replace it, It's gonna sound weird for the first 2 weeks or so as it's broken in. In my case the max I played was between 25-30 while I was breaking it in otherwise kept the volume around 17 - 20. After about 2 weeks it'll start sounding more normal and full and at that point you can start cranking as you like.

It appears that one issue is that the cone detaches from the ring and can be fixed with epoxy or speaker glue. I am hoping that is the issue and also that it can be fixed without any seat removal.

fyi the backseat has to be removed not to mention both c pillars.. then remove the rear deck trim to access the sub... it will take the uninitiated a few hrs to do this..
my suggestion if your going to go thru the headache always upgrade.. why go to all the trouble just to get back what u already had?

I've often seen used ones as well, selling for about half that.

I have yet to find a post that indicates an aftermarket sub that works well with the OEM system. I would prefer not to add a new amp and put a box in the trunk. I think the OEM one suited my needs fine, if it was durable enough not to need to be replaced any time I listen to bass heavy music.

Good info here. Got a model number just to add to the clarification? Thanks as I may be needing one soon as well.
