I have a 2010 with 95k miles (about to be for sale) with no-issue-what-so-ever.

Mind you it's a RWD with NO air suspension, so this might make a difference

upper front control arms replaced at 50K at $3800, covered by CPO. now its popping again in turns.

So I went to my dealership and complained about front suspension being weak. After inspection they concluded all control arms and sway bar bushings must be changed. So glad I got L/Certified car. Total for that repair is $3,800. So my advice - try to get L/Certified car. It's worth it. I own my car 1 month and CPO price premium paid off already.

At over-inflated Toyota labor and parts costs, yes. However, if I ever need the same work done, it will be with aftermarket parts and DIY or independent for 500-800 bucks.

Actually what probably happened is as soon as the dealer knew you had a CPO, they changed the control arms. Otherwise you'd take it to an independent and they'd charge you $600-$1000. Any sort of extended warranty turns into a feeding frenzy at the dealer...they see it...they change parts. I guess it's good if you have that warranty, if you don't, you just spend 1/3 at an independent and be done with it. Six and one, seven in the other.

I've owned my 07 LS for two and half years, I bought it with 70,000 miles...I've driven it 60,000 miles since. I've put $750 in parts into it during that time...the control arms and a wheel bearing. I now have 130,000 miles. I anticipate spending nothing for the next two years and 60,000 miles. Wishful thinking? Maybe, but the "major repair" has now been done (the control arms). And the other major repair (the brake actuator) has now been extended under factory warranty until Decemeber of 2013.

My GS430 was recently totaled so I am in the market for a vehicle. Normally I would not be too interested in a LS as I am still pretty young, though I like bigger nice cars, but I do love the power and smoothness of my V8 and I can't get a V8 in a 4th gen GS, I don't really care for the 3rd Gen GS but I may test drive one again. I am narrowing down my search to a used 4th Gen GS, 4th or possibly 3rd Gen LS, Infiniti M45/Q70, possibly a IS350 though I want more room, 4th Gen Acura TL SHawd(I know with the beak but with a aftermarket grill and the larger wheels I find them very nice looking plus they are generally very reliable, sporty yet roomy, and have the best awd system and the selection is pretty good for them), and last gen RL if I can find one with low miles. Can't do Germans even though some are very tempting, even more so then Japanese, as reliability is my biggest concern when buying a car.

Anyway, I have done some research on the LS460, know to avoid the air suspension models, there are some bushing/control arm issues I need to look further into, but is there anything to really look for or popping up on some older LS460's with some miles on them I need to look for.

Some of those cars you are interested in are not only not V8's but are also front wheel drive. Not sure if that concerns you or not. It would me.

In regards to the Acura, do you research. They have literally fallen off the charts for reliability. I believe they are 17 of the 30 or so manufacturers, mostly due to transmission problems. Shocking, but true.

As for any issues with the LS, the only areas of concern (and even then...minimal), are the noted control arms, water pumps, and the Mark Levinson amp. All of which can be fixed for peanuts. 1500 for CA's, couple hundred for water pump and amp for 6-800. And your car may not suffer from any of them. For example, I only had to replace ONE control arm and one ball joint, I Diy'd my water pump for 60 bucks and my ML amp has never failed me. My 08 has over 190k kms (125k miles?), on the odo and has been the most reliable car I've ever owned (about 20 cars from BMW to Acura to Domestic).

While the LS is a big heavy car it actually has some hustle. 0-60 is just under 6 seconds. Should drive one then decide!

I'd stay away from the Infinitys. And the Acura TL, while not as problematic as the TLX, is not really in the same league, even with AWD.

Get the absolute newest LS you can, if you decide to go in that direction.

Acura is still above average, but not as high up as Toyota, Lexus or Honda.

I'm (potentially) in the market for a 4th gen LS as my 15 year old Jag has some rather expensive problems and just isn't comfortable anymore.
How would I spot these LS issues during a test drive?
