The 07LS is currently at 7,500 miles on Mobil 0w30 and averaging +35 mpgs at 75mph. The mpg's went up at about 7,000 mi. It's doin' so well I dread draining it. Redline 5w30 is goin' in there next. However, for the $$ vs. benefit factor, I'm impressed with the 0w30. I'm putting that stuff in everything.

I thought you were a hardcore Royal Purple guy. I also thought you swore by 5W30?

I bought some 0w30 when Mobil was having their rebate program last month (didn't even realize they made a 0w30 until I saw it on the shelf). I also bought 0w20, 5w30 and 5w20. What I'm now doing is putting 5 quarts of the heavier weight oil in, then adding 4 quarts of the lighter stuff. I figure it turns it into a heavier 20 weight oil. And I don't see any harm in it seeing how it's the same brand/additive package.

So far I've got 1,000 miles on it...averaging some outstanding fuel economy (27mpg), but I attribute most of that to the warmer temps I've been experiencing. My daily commute is 34 miles of highway driving at speeds between 70-80 mph. And another 46 miles on back roads averaging 40-50 mph. Luckily I very rarely get stuck in traffic, in fact I hardly even use my brakes (my brake pads have 30,000 miles on them and they look like they're brand new).

The Mobil 1 ended up costing me $2 a quart because of the rebate...so I stocked up and bought 30 quarts of it.

Default You're right...but clublexus has forced reconsideration.

There is a lot of information on this site. Roadfrog, you posted some interesting comments about RP that forced me to take a look into it. RP has 3 different oils they market. The Royal Purple HPS is the one that I would use, not the one available at Walmart. In between I tried the 0w30 from Mobil and the mpg's are really good and there is no weird startup noise. Further, I already planned to use a 5w30 in the summer so I'm interested in how the Redline is going to perform in the next few weeks. If I did use 0w20 I would swap it every 3-5k. Moreover my champion is Mobil1 0w30 from walmart at $45 (two-5qt jugs at $22.50each).

Fair enough.

I have yet to swap out my TGMO 0W20 for the Castrol 5W30 I purchased as an "experiment".

The 4.6 consumed 3/4 qt. on the Mobil 0w30 after 7,000 miles and six months. The oil color is still very light in color. It's only slightly darker than it was 6 months ago.

Oil: Mobil 0w30
Oil filter: K&N
mileage: 61,100

Default Redline 5w30

Immediately, the motor is very quiet. However, I just dumped oil with over 7,000 miles on it so that db decrease could be expected. The sluggish acceleration is back as expected. RP Maxclean will get dumped in the tank with high expectations.

62,000 miles
Redline 5w30
K&N filter

Seeing as how this thread got bounced up again, I'm 3,200 miles in on my oil change and I haven't had any oil usage. Now this is sort of my "sweet spot" regarding...is it going to start using oil? I'm now using Mobil 1 synthetic and I've blended a mixture of 5w20 and 5w30.

I do consider Mobil 1 to be a quality oil, much better than the cheap Carquest synthetic I was using before, so we'll see if that makes a difference. I'll know in another 1-2 thousand miles if it does better.

Just an update on my Castrol 5w30. No difference from TGMO 0W20. I'm at about 4500 miles and the oil on the dipstick is nearing the add mark. This is identical to the 0W20 consumption. So it's back to the TGMO after this change.

It's funny you mention it, I hit 4,500 miles on my current oil change last week and I was maybe 1/2 quart low using a blend of 5w20/0w30 Mobil 1 synthetic. So I agree with you, the heavier weight oil experiment did nothing in terms of oil usage. Truthfully going 7,000 miles between oil changes and adding maybe a quart isn't a big deal anyway.

I still have enough Mobil 1 0w30 to do one more oil change - I bought 30 quarts of it during the rebate in May - but when I'm done with it I'll probably just go back to a high quality 0w20 again...any of the name brands work for me.

The only reason I'm so big on the TGMO is the moly content. The fact that the price per liter (quart) is about the same as an aftermarket oil. Plus, my Blackstone reports were so good on it.

The previous owner of my car always did synthetic 10k miles will it be a issue if I swap to normal oil at 5k miles ?

I prefer normal oil and shorter intervals.

Shouldn't be a problem. Now if you were switching to a synthetic after using a conventional oil for an extended period of time, then that could be more of an issue.

Yeah if I could get TGMO for the same prices I'm paying for synthetic at Walmart I'd definitely do it. I've used the TGMO before, but I think I paid around $9 a quart for it and I had to go to the dealer (not the easiest place to get to for me).

I ended up paying $2 dollars a quart for the Mobil 1 with the spring rebate program (easily the best bargain I've ever gotten on oil). And although that's no longer available, I can buy Penzoil synthetic for around $4.25 a quart at Walmart right now and Quaker State synthetic for $3.90 a quart. But I agree, the TGMO is outstanding stuff with a robust additive package.
