The LX is basically a Land Cruiser with a Lexus badge on it. It's the stuff of legends. If I may dare say so, it's probably the most reliable current Lexus, not that others are less reliable.
I mean, go and look at the LX forums. You basically hear crickets over there.

I agree, it's legendary. One of two vehicles that crossed the north pole and has gone on countless expeditions just because of it's reliability.

Every data set I've seen indicates that the LX and Land Cruiser are literally the most reliable vehicles on the road. If you want a big heavy truck, and you can afford to pay the considerable price (even used), you can't go wrong.

Like others have said, the LX/Land Cruiser is one of the most reliable vehicles on the road. If a reliable luxury SUV to drive until its got 200k miles on it is what you want, its hard to imagine going wrong with an LX. They're VERY smooth and quiet too.

To lease new, I think I'd do a Range Rover. But to keep...surely not lol

Love them both, and I would absolutely consider a properly-maintained LX with 100k miles, even more so than a nice LS with 100k miles, given how rugged LX is.

i have an 2009 LX570 (but did the 2013 front and rear conversion and added the supercharger body kit) and its been extremely reliable. What I like most about it is that I don't see too many around. In my LS I see maybe 3-5 a week. In the LX570, maybe once a week. Also, the power and luxury is seamless when I switch from work mobile to family mobile. What I hate about it is the gas mileage!

I have an 2001 landcruiser and totally agree with others here that it is extremely reliable. I have 210,000 miles on it with normal maintenance. Just did a Blackstone oil analysis and got back an excellent report. I keep all my vehicles for at least 200k or 10 years or more. Bought my first ls in 1989, another in 2000, and my current 460 in 2012. I think this landcruiser may out live me! I agree it's thirsty-15 mpg on hwy and around 12 in town, but I didn't purchase it for fuel economy. My ls's all have been very reliable-my current 460 has been trouble free so far but very different than the previous models in many respects.

Sister had an LX470. Transmission went and I had to replace it. Apparently it's a known issue with these cars around the 2000-2001 mark (probably much older than you are considering).

as reliable? i would say that the LX are more reliable- they feel like you are in a tank that can go almost anywhere, just like to drink alot of gas.

I owned an 2001 LX470 for 4 years and several other Lexus (4 GS, 2 RX and current LS) and don't recall having any problem beside regular maintenance and a set of brake pads (due to too much dust) for the LX. None of my other Lexus needed anything major, really. I like the high driving position, rear hatch that opens like a clamshell, and the ability to raise/lower the car.
