Question Jmcraney Wind Noise Fix (Long Range Outcome)

I am thinking about doing the "Jmcraney Wind Noise Fix" on my 2007 LS460. I bought it used over two years ago. I am looking for any feedback from those who have done the fix in the past. How is it working?

It helped a bit, I didn't use the exact method, but it's held up. What I found from the fix, is that my passenger's door molding was the culprit for most of the wind noise (which became more pronounced and identifiable when the mirror area was taken care of). So if your door moldings are fine, the Jmcraney wind noise fix should be great for you.

It may have helped a bit, but mine appears to come more from either the rubber around the window, or the rubber around the door. I haven't been able to figure it out.

I did this and also installed the updated and finned, sail panels (the black corner pieces) found on the newer LS's. It made a huge difference for me.

I did it to my '08 460L, and it worked wonders.

On my '10 600hL, I used the finned pieces roadfrog referenced and silicone glue (the one recommended in the original jmcraney procedure) in all the openings when installing, but I skipped the sheet metal pieces (i.e., I ultimately snapped the trim pieces into place). Excellent results thus far, though time will tell if I should have done the entire fix.

Which part specifically?

Please let me assure everyone that it doesn't make any difference which parts you use or even if you put the trim back on. The problem is the seal behind the trim. If you are able to completely seal the area behind where the trim normally is, by any means, you will have a quiet car, and if you are unable to seal that area then you will have wind noise, the degree of wind noise depending on how much leakage there is.

My '07 LS460, which I bought new had a horrible wind noise problem. After I was able to seal the area behind the trim the wind noise was completely gone. I used the parts that came on the car, just as I described in suggested DIY repair. There is a reason why many of the cars, but not all of the cars, developed the wind noise problem. I have explained that many times. The DIY repair that I suggested overcomes the reason why the the trim separates.

There are many ways to seal the area behind the trim and the way that I suggested has a high probability of success. You can use the old parts, new finned parts, or no parts - makes no difference, but you must get it completely sealed.

I have spent a lot of time trying to explain this and I am aware that my view of this is not shared by everyone.

The repair of my '07 was done in early '08. I traded my '07 for a new '14 about a year ago. The '07 which had the old trim design (without the vortex generator) and it was as quiet as my '14 which has the new trim design. The wind noise is related to the seal behind the trim!

If you are concerned about the durability of the repair that I suggested - mine was still good after 7 years.

Interesting because my Lexus dealer installed double pane windows as per TSB not too long after I bought the car, and I've never had wind noise issues after that. They even paid to have those two new front windows re-tinted.

Not all cars had the wind noise problem, and it is likely that they replaced the trim with new trim when they replaced the glass on your car and with the gasket properly aligned the new trim did not detach again. On my '07, when they changed out the glass it made the wind noise worse, probably because they caused the separation of the trim to worsen.

I have the wind noise and can't wait to try it.

I did a test drive of my new to me 2008 about 3 weeks ago. I was disappointed when i heard the noise. I expected a completley quiet ride. Especially since its my first high luxury car. I got a LWB, so It had the door glass in it. I do feel its coming from the corners. Very soon, very soon Ill try it.

The fix made no improvement on my '07 460.

I still have significant wind noise emanating from the upper right area (viewed from inside) of the driver side window.
