A check for $900 from Lexus is on it's way to me for the cracked dashboard repair that became a recall a few months ago.
Thanks for the tip swfla! Greatly appreciated.
I will indeed keep all documentation
It's never a great thing when something goes bad with ta car, but to have the company back the vehicle like that after years of owenership and applied miles, and cut a check...not sure what else you can ask for.

Just had all 8 done on the '08 460 I bought two weeks ago. I couldn't bring myself to trust Chinese eBay stuff to carry my family around so I used all OEM Lexus parts. My shop charged me an entirely reasonable amount for labor but the total was still painful -- about $3k for parts alone. I'm also going to be replacing the tires tomorrow, because we found cupping and edge wear on the extreme inside edge of a couple of them.

Even before the tire replacement and alignment the difference is night and day, well beyond just the lack of clunks when braking or turning sharply. The steering is dramatically tighter and more responsive than before, and better than it was on any other 460 I drove during my search (all '07-'09 models). The car is much more confidence-inspiring, and feels like a new luxury car should. Now I just hope the redesigned parts are as good as advertised and I don't have to think about control arms for a good long time...

But you DID drive around in inferior Lexus parts that failed in the first place and trust that the "new" POSSIBLY improved parts will not fail prematurely.

I'm not saying you made a poor choice, just an attempt on my part to put things in perspective when and if I ever have to do this work. As I've said in other posts and threads, I've had great luck with Ebay items and parts. Most Chinese components have met ISO standards for many years. I read somewhere that Chinese metal is extremely good quality, perhaps the best. http://www.forbes.com/sites/boblutz/...made-in-china/

I am sure there are lots of good-quality non-OEM replacement parts coming out of China. The problem is that non-OEM quality has been inconsistent, and there is no way for an average consumer to know if a part meets specifications or not. The same supplier may supply parts of very different levels of quality. Using the parts is a bit of a leap of faith.

The new Lexus parts, as far as I can tell, are doing well in service. They're on 4+ years' worth of cars; if they were as problematic as the original parts we would be seeing a pattern of failures on high-mileage 2011 and 2012 cars by now.

When my mechanic was replacing my control arms he recommended that the ball joints be replaced as well. Just like the bushings you cannot just buy the ball joints from Lexus. You would need to buy the whole front assembly. I was able to find the ball joints off of ebay for 90 bucks.
