Question for hybrid battery of LS460HL
#4
The "old husbands tale" of a five year battery life is based on the Lead-Acid batteries we use in conventional
cars. The Traction Battery in all Lexus/Toyota Hybrids are Nickel-Metal Hydride (288 volt) and will last longer than the car. Covered by a 8 year or 100k warrantee they are extremely reliable. Note: there is still a small Lead-Acid type 12 volt battery for the radio, wipers, lights etc. Also provides backward compatibility for jump starting. Might be what was being referred to because it will no doubt require replacement at the 5 year mark.

The hybrid tech is pretty standard Toyota stuff. There are now millions of cars running that hardware. Early worries when the Prius first came out was the cost & lifespan of replacement batteries. It's turned out that they're easily getting 150K+ miles before they see any issues and even then it's only a fraction of them. The cost is still high (thousands) but there are places that will replace the battery pack with a reconditioned pack for less than a grand. There's a place in Houston that will do it in your driveway in an hour or so. It's nowhere near my radar - I'll worry about it in another 10 years :-)
