amazing on a few levels

the amount of force involved to destroy those rods, and the fact that theres still a few technicians left out there that can handle a job of that scale .

What needs to be replaced if an engine gets hydrolocked? That scene on the floor looks like complete carnage.

Small block replacement. Which includes rods, pistons and new block. Then have the rest of the motor inspected.
For hybrids, the fuses were all that went. replaced those and everything was fine.

This unfortunate drowning victim is a RWD LS460. Can tell by the lack of a transfer case on the rear of the transmission.

That means everything below the cylinder head, but not including the crank? Ouch.

As for the hybrid trying to impersonate a Land Rover Defender, I assume it was running only on EV mode when it hit water, otherwise the engine would have hydrolocked. How much did it cost to fix that? I'm a hybrid ES driver and with all the crazy rainfall now, it would be good to know how to minimize damage in case I get stuck in a flood.

It was a RX450h that got flooded. The engine did hydrolock actually. I am unsure of the cost of that one. I know the damage was less. Consisted of metal shavings in the oil pan, so a precautionary rebuild was done. And of course the fuses popping.

That hurts my heart to see a new one like that basically get destroyed. 1000 mile baby. I feel bad for whoever ends up with it 10 years from now too

So glad to have stumbled onto this thread. 1) Because I get to see the beautiful guts of a Lexus, and 2) because I now know how close I came to completely destroying my '97 ES-300 years ago when I decided the water didn't look that deep and forged ahead. At its deepest point the water reached the bottom of the side windows and was washing over the top of the hood.

Boy, did I dodge a bullet! My Lexus, though, plowed right on through and never so much as hiccupped afterwards. Ever.

I wonder if the driver had put the car on HIGH HEIGHT before pontooning? Might have helped ... a little.

I resurrected this old thread to illustrate what happens when one does not use simple common sense.

I agree that $15k actually sounds cheap for this level of repair. My concern would be all of the electronic modules inside that got wet. I'm sure this car will have unexplained gremlins for years to come. It escapes me why someone would pay out of pocket for this repair. True, it may cover up the incident on carfax and hide a salvage title reducing the diminished value, however isn't this why you pay insurance? If that were my car I'd be campaigning to the insurance company to declare a total loss. I'd pay my dumb *** fee (deductible) and some higher premiums for a few years and move on. I don't know all of the details so I'll shut up now.
