Default 2008 LS460 SWB - gas hungry?

So I'm at half the tank on my first full on my new baby and the MPG shown is very low...12.6

city driving (Chicago suburbs) @ 14mph average

seems very low compared to 30-32 mpg some people are getting on these forums. granted that''s probably highway miles.

any thoughts?

I drive like really, really hard and I still avg. 18mpg... I'd say give it a few tanks and see where you're at then.
But, the best explanation to all this shenanigans is...
Because Racecar.

I'm a relaxed driver (I never floored the pedal). I get 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

I use 0w30 fully synthetic oil (heavier than 0w20/5w20) due to the inferno my car has to go through where I live. I also use 95 octane gas (91 octane tends to give lower mpg for god knows what reason).

When I brought my car from the US, it had 0w20 oil in it. MPG was noticeably better. When I switched to 0w30, it went down but not as bad as what you're experiencing.

Back to your case. It MAYBE: the type of oil you use, gas octane and/or spark plugs (aged, inefficient).

I'm not an engineer and don't have the least bit of credible knowledge beyond my personal experience which doesn't go farther than the few words written above.

hm, now that I think about it I might have found the culprit. I sometimes let the car idle in the morning before I leave for work for 5-10 min.

that's enought to cut my mpg drastically since my drive to work is about 10-12 minutes only

anyways, I scheduled my first complemantary service at my Lexus dealeship and they'll change the oil & filter, rotate tires, check fluids and the like.
they said they could hook it up to the computer and check it also to make sure everything is ok.

weird thing is that my sales guy said the car has non-syntethic oil in it right now...wth, really? (CPO car also)
he did say they will put full sysnthetic in it for free if I wanted to.
heck ya..

I'll do a test on a full tank after the service and I won't start the car early in the mornings and see where I am after a week or so. I'll report back

Lexus says the car takes fully synthetic oil.

Lunchtime naps have the same effect.

if you only drive short distances at slow speeds.. 12~14 is not impossible.

Chicago traffic and having your car idle will do that.
