The problem is with the pistons, all may have to be replaced to get rid off the knocking noise.

Good luck.

at about 600 to 900 rpm, both in reverse and forward but not at idle??? At idle the rpm goes just above 900 rpm.

With 9600 miles on it I have had the car at the dealer 5 times. They cant find anything. It comes and goes. No Lexus field reports site the problem and therefore they say there is no problem. Really frustrating!!

Any ideas? The car is 10 months old. I bot it new for $72k.

Each time is met with the canned answer of of the fuel injectors, but I have continued to press for more. My last visit I asked that they compare my noise to a car on the lot or one that has been brought in for service, and my car was much louder. Even the head of service agreed something was off. Now the dealer has had it for 3 more weeks, and just yesterday called to say they need to bring a "Lexus Specialist" in to diagnos the problem. He mentioned to me that he thinks it is an issue with a lifter and a posible valve problem, but he can't do anything until Lexus authorizes him. This specialist will take 30-45 days to come into town (Columbus, OH) and I am sure he/she will say it is normal. What BS...the car is under warranty and I have brought it 6 times already. Having owned 4 Lexus vehicles in the past, and currently in the market for a new GX (which now uses the same engine as the LS) is causing me to re-evaluate my loyalty to Lexus.

Maybe they will get tired of me when I just bring it in every month and tell them I am not happy with this noise. It was not there when I bought it, and I don't expect an $85k car to sound like a Jetta.

This issue has come up many times and Lexus seems to always attribute this to high pressure fuel injection.

I have not experienced this sort of problem with my '07 LS460. But I had a Mazda 929 that had a condition called "Piston Slap" that was very much like what is being reported here.

Here are some links to descriptions of Piston Slap.

Same song.....I asked about the ticking noise the last time my 2009 AWD was in the shop. High pressure fuel injectors are the culprit. Normal sound and nothing can be done to reduce it. It is really bad when then temp is below freezing. Disappointing for a Lexus. But I can live with it.

The ticking noise has been in my 2010 LS460 since 1000 miles. Its now got 22K miles, bad as ever. 650 rpm to 850 rpm. Drives me nuts.

Lexus has forced me to sue them because of lack of action by them. Its approaching 10 times for inspections by Lexus. at this stage I believe the only fix is to get a court to order them to act.

I can give you them name of my attorney if you request it.
I am in San Clemente CA.

The ticking is loudest when heard from the drivers seat.

They have forgotten their early days. In the past they went out of their way to delight their customers. Sadly that does not seem to be the case today. Today they make bad design and manufaturing decisions and then hide behind "Its working as designed"

I'm on my 2nd LS 460 and both have them have this ticking sound. I seldom hear it when I am in the car as I have the music on. I stopped paying any attention to it.

This afternoon while I was at the gas pump a late model Mercedes S class pulled up to the adjacent pump. It had a much louder ticking noise. I initially thought it was a diesel engine until I saw him fill it with gasoline.

Seriously? A lawsuit over a ticking noise between 650 and 850 RPM? What kind of attorney would take a case like that? Wait, don't answer that. I know.

If it is inherent to the car’s planned design (like it or not) and it is not a safety issue, how have you been damaged financially? Yes, you’re irritated. Yes, you’re mad? Yes, it drives you nuts. But financially damaged? No. I hate the ticking noise too and it is a poor design, but if Lexus can’t fix it because, well, it isn’t broke, then what does the lawsuit do? Ask them to redesign fuel intake?

Why don’t you just sell the car and move on? IMO, life is too short to get hung up with lawsuits like that.
