My buddy has a Hyundai Azera (front wheel drive) and he says the thing is terrible in the snow - which makes me laugh because the reason why he didn't buy the LS is because it's rear wheel drive (I don't think he realizes that you can get it in AWD).
There really are some front wheel drive cars that aren't very good in the snow, it has to do with weight distribution. I have driven some mini vans in the snow and they are down right dangerous.

I'm a former Hyundai engineer, I'm pretty sure the Azera is RWD. It was never a car I was involved with, but as I recall the Korean engineering group that designed it was the RWD group. That's not specifically what the group was called, but they did RWDs and trucks and such. I could be wrong, somebody look it up ... I'm afraid I might puke if I go to the website.

I believe you are correct. That is what I'm thinking. We never referred to any (of our own) cars as their retail name. We called them by code. I still have to think of the code first. But it's been 4 years, a lot whiskey and shock therapy ... so the nightmares are fading.

Lexus Test Driver
This is my other "LS" hehehe it gets me through everything. Those ruts you are looking at are over a foot deep as I am the only one who comes out here. This thing laughs off snow. I've taken it out in over 2 feet on unplowed roads and never got it stuck. Its not AWD either. I don't understand it. BUT it has 39k miles and the interior is falling apart, multiple pieces broken off, fuel pump replaced last week, armrests broken.
My real LS is sitting in the driveway waiting for warmer weather.

19" Snows??
I just picked up a 2012 LS 460L RWD and sold my '05 LS 430 last week. I live in Minnesota, so I will need to get a spare set of wheels and mount up some good snow tires on them for winter, as I have done with the 2 previous V8-powered RWD Lexus sedans I've owned here in MN. I have the 19" factory alloys on my new 460 L and I absolutely love them - the wheels really make the car!
When pricing a spare set of the 19" alloys with the local Lexus dealer, the parts guy said that I definitely shouldn't get 19" snows... He said that 18-inchers would perform so much better in the snow.
The problem with the 18" wheels for the LS 460 is that I hate the way they look. With ANY of the available 18" factory wheels on it, the LS 460 just lacks the substance of those bigger, beefy, 19" 5-spoke wheels. I don't want the look of my car to change, when I put on the winter rubber. I understand that a narrower tire will be better in the snow, and I could step it down from a 245/45R19 to the narrower 235/50R19 and still use the 19" factory alloys.
My question is this: is anybody running 19" snows on your LS 460, and if so what size / brand of tire is it and, how does the car work in the snow? Thanks!
