Oil and Common Sense
After talking recently with the service manager of my local Lex dealer, I am interested in what other 460 owners are using in thier oil changes. The manager I spoke with said that synthetic is mandatory but that 5/30 should be fine with no adverse effects. Now we all know that Mobil 1 comes in that weight, is a high quality product and is quite reasonable to purchase (especially on sale at Costco).
Are there many here who are already using this product rather than the much more costly prescribed oils? What guidance have you received from Lex service people? I am searching for a common sense approach to the issue not an ideological and obsessive one. Thanks!

Lexus did my last change and asked me for my preference (no price difference) - I went with synthetic. I plan to do my own oil changes from now on and will continue with this choice. The price at Costco is dropping - in the Northwest, they sell Castrol's Syntec 5/30 and I noticed the price was $5.66/litre two days ago, a dollar less than a month ago.

In the Philly area (go home team) Costco currently has a coupon for $9 off a six pack of Mobil 5/30. That makes it just about the regular price of $23 or about 3.75 a qt.

the coupon is in the mail. it should have come a few weeks ago? i already used mine to get 2 cases of 5-30
i don't own the 460 anymore, but you guys sure the spec is 5-30 for the 460 engine? somehow i thought it's 0-20, but i am just playing back from memory.
and personally, i'd just stick with synthetic

The cap says 0w-20 or 5w-20. It's not clear to this non-mechanic is that means it must be synthetic (or not).
Put another way, are those two weights ONLY available in synthetic...if so, then, why doesn't it say "use synthetic oil only" to clearly affirm what they mean?
And if those weights of oil are available as old style dinosaur remains is that OK to use?

Not to be a pest, but again I ask the crux of my question: Are those weights of oil manufactured and sold as refined from old-fashioned dinosaur juice (non synthetic)? No one has answered the question if there is really a choice (dino or synthetic) or if you can ONLY get those approved weights in synthetic.
