Daryll, you can only find 0W 20 in synthetic. The dealer told me that will get you the best fuel mileage as well. I only run synthetic in my cars...

You can go with either conventional or synthetic oil. What's more important is the interval of changes and this is governed by application and operating conditions. IOW, push the car hard, change the oil more often.

Oil 101: For anyone who'd like to know, the designation 0W-20 means it is a multigrade oil, as opposed single grade that would say SAE 0W only. The 'W' designation means Winter, not weight. The numbers are a time measurement, and reflect the amount of time it takes for the oil to flow through a standard orifice. 10W30 oil is a 10-weight oil that will not thin more than a 30-weight oil when it gets hot.

"0" weight is what the flow is when cold IE ANYTIME the engine is started after it has cooled off. Not just cold climates. This allows rapid flow/volume of oil to moving parts = less wear and yes less resistance = better mpg.
In UAE I might push the upper limit to 30 or 40 weight. No harm done.
Top grade full synthetic only.

I don't mean to get picky, but your statement is inaccurate. The W means the oil meets specifications for viscosity at various low temperatures depending on weight, and is therefore suitable for Winter use. 5W is tested at -25C, 10W at -20C, 15W at -15C, and 20W at -10C. A Texan cold engine in July is a lot warmer than an Alaskan cold engine in January. So when SAE says W, they mean Winter...

Thumbs down Moderate Winter and Oil

So, the oow has to do with viscosity in the winter and the ability of oil to flow effectivley. I live just outside of Philly; our winters are quite moderate and the 460 is garage kept. Point being, I probably never start my car when the temp is not at least 20F and most of the time a garage start is at about 60F. Does that mean that Mobil1, 5-30, is acceptable since I never have to cope with extreme cold? That is what my local service mgr said, note the beginning of this thread. Your take?

Absolutely. I agree with your service guy, you should have no trouble at all with Mobil 1 5-30.

Many of the Lexus preferences are recommended to optimize fuel consumption, not just temperature & service.

I changed mine with Toyota 0W20 full synthetic. I think it's made by Mobil 1 and packaged for Toyota...

Default Cheap

I can not enderstand how someone can spend the money to buy one of these beautiful vehicles then pinch pennies when it comes time for maintenance. Do you know a Lexus Master Certified tech. has to go through a 3 day training course for this vehicle so they know everything about them so trust in the dealer to do what is in the owners manual the right way and to fix it when you have a problem. instead of not understanding when something breaks they will not bend over backwards to help you becouse you go to jiffy lube for oil changes and such.

I agree with you that penny pinching with this kind of car is absolutely ridiculous. At the same time, Jiffy lube (and probably 10,000 other places) are just as qualiifed to change oil. Changing oil is not rocket science people. If one thinks that A Lexus shop is more qualified to change oil then I would like to sell you a pre-owned bridge in Brooklyn. In my Corvette I change my own oil (and filter) and I use Mobile 1 Fully synthetic 15W50.

The most important component in all of this IMO is to use fully synthetic oil at the recomended weights (0W20 or 5W20) whether it be Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Amsoil, whatever. I would NOT use Sythetic blends or conventional oil in any of todays cars. And if you know for a fact that your LS (or any other car you have) has already had Fully synthetic in there, then you had better NOT go back to conventional oil because that can turn into a problem

What problems might occur if you use conventional oil after using synethtic?
