Behold, the LS generations...

This picture was used in one of the LS press brochures, and I think a larger version/others are out there.

Nice to see the evolution of the flagship model!

Yes, it's true that there is a resemblance across the lines...I read one review where the writer said of the LS 460, something like "the front has the same gaze, the forward 'look' that the original had." I also think the C-pillar look on the LS 460 brings back some of the LS 400 feel.

However, when I've taken pictures of LS 400s and 460s at the same locale, the difference is quite remarkable. Mainly, the 460 design with the fastback and flowing lines is much more sculpted compared to the more 3-box shape that the 400 had.

yes cars in general in the past were boxy. that was the style. the 460 is basically the original 400 but with smoother sleeker lines. the resemblance is there, but i can see the big difference too.

great looking cars

I have had three of those cars and currently own two and I can tell you the biggest change was the last one. They deffinately did something different this time around as I was serously considering a merc.

They've come a long way in such a short amount of time.

There's a model missing in this picture, it goes from first gen to the refreshed second gen. The original second gen is missing, and there's a lot of difference between the original and refreshed second gen.

it shows generation not facelift. if so then they are missing the 01-03 as well. this is just to show the generations, where the current one is the 4th gen

Cool

I'd love to see these generations from the rear. Much bigger difference between years

Interestingly, I've seen a few instances where a pic of the 2LS is substituted for the 1LS by mistake, I guess the design similarities make them more easily confused. To this day I am still surprised that the 2LS has the same overall length, it always looks longer to me.

wow really? i also thought the 2LS are longer. i guess them being a bit bulkier and wider gives that illusion huh?

to be very honest, i didn't know about the 1LS and 2LS difference until maybe 2 yrs ago

Yeah, that's probably why...also the wheelbase is longer which may help. IIRC however the 2LS did come out lighter than the 1LS. Also the 3LS had the same overall length.
