Default Radar cruise control

I wonder if Lexus has made any improvements in the adaptive cruise control. I have it in my '05 LS430, and its operation leaves a lot to be desired, although I wouldn't want another car without it. Does anybody know?

Default Almost perfect in my '03 LS430

It works wonderfully in my '03 LS430.

Not perfect, though. Sometimes when I'm approaching a large truck which is in another lane, it thinks it's in my lane and starts overreacting.

I understand they've switched from laser to radar, which should help in inclement weather. The laser based system shut down in rain or snow.

I too now require adaptive cruise control and navigation in any future car.

Interesting that it's not available at all in the SWB LS460.

They exclude a lot more than just the Radar Cruise for the SWB version as options . . .

Yes, the laser based system shuts down in rain; that's not my biggest complaint about it. My biggest complaint is that the operation is not smooth. Say you're behind a slow moving car and he speeds up. There is a considerable lag before my car accelerates, such that other cars start cutting in in front of me. Also, occasionally, I come up behind a vehicle and the system doesn't "see" the vehicle at all.

I wanted this, but it was not an option in New York.

Oh indeed. And, in the process, they exclude some buyers.

Interesting that you can get a Camry with Radar Cruise Control, but not a SWB LS460.

I have owned the 2005 LS430 and now the Ls460L, both with RADAR adaptive cruise control. In my opinion, there has been a lot of improvment since the first offering in the 430. The lag when cars cut in and out in front of you has considerably been decreased. Also when you are following somebody on the higway at a given speed and that car gradually slows down, the LS 430 used to keep up its speed until it got closer then the set range and then you could feel it slow down. In the 460 it is so smooth now that you could be following somebody at 75 and he could slow down to 50 gradually and if you don't pay attention you are meandering along at 50 and don't even realize it. On a recent trip to CA, my second driver (wife) on occasion asked me "why are you driving so slow" and I hadn't realized that my car had locked on somebody that had been going faster and then slowed down.

Sounds good. Thanks for the info. I guess the "radar" cruise control works in the rain, doesn't it? The "laser" cruise control doesn't.
