You can manually update the artist, album and song names on the touchscreen but its a bit tedious, especially if you have lots of CDs/tracks.

Ripping to the HD was really annoying. I did it exactly once and then installed this:

which lets you use USB, Ipod etc. Works like a charm with the iPod Classic I just leave in the car.

they have a couple different versions so tell them what car you have and they'll send you the right one.

it's not 'metadata' as such. gracenote is a database of disc signatures attached to corresponding disc data (track list etc).
to make it recognize a burnt disc, you must use something like XLD (mac) to burn and have your music in a particular format (e.g. .flacs + .cue file made using accuraterip technique).

A CD standard is called CD Text, it's been like this from the mid/late 90's. A lot of modern cars even before 2007 used the CD text feature to show artist and track names.

Does it pull from this data, or can it ? I don't own a MAC, so I am not sure what XLD is.. If anyone else has done this, what PC program would do this ?

What EXACTLY is the audio system looking for to know what CD it is and what it can pull from ?

Can I take like 20gb on a 32gb USB drive full of music and leave it in there ? Or do a need a "i" device to do this ? (btw not an apple fan) Or is there a device that will do that ?

At $250 and if it does a nice music setup, if its easy to use and find music, it might be a no brainer seeing that the built in one already has a lot to be desired and I don't eve have the car yet.

CD-Text is supported by some publishers; it's additional metadata burned into the cd tracks. Sony in particular used to use it on a lot of their CDs.

If you burn the CD out of iTunes (Audio CD not MP3 CD) it can embed the codes and the system can read them.

It supports USB FAT16 and 32 partitions. I think WAV and MP3 formats are supported. I've plugged iPhones into it and I think any device that supports the USB music standard (like an Android phone) might be supported.

In operation (with an iPod) it comes up as an additional CD changer; with a single MP3 disk. Inside that disk are folders, which correspond to the playlists on the iPod. You can also change to Artist and Album mode which would populate those into the 'folder' list respectively.

I've have a Vaistech box in my LS430 for over 10 years; and it's worked pretty seamlessly; so adding it to this car was a no brainer. The ability to have 100+ albums in the car at all times is pretty amazing; I just bring them in occasionally to sync them up whenever I buy new music; although with phones getting to the point where I can put all my music on them I might go Bluetooth.

I think the behavior with a USB drive is a little different; it might just read the folders off the stick. The manual is here:
