high pitch sound coming from engine bay area
the sound seems to get quieter when I drive at faster speeds avoce 30mph. It seems to completely go away when I come to a full stop.
anyone know what it could be ? does this have to do with the pulley and belt recall from a few years back ?
any help would be appreciated. thanks

By "high pitch" - what do you mean? Squeal, hissing, etc? If it's a squeal, it's likely the serpentine belt, but could also be a pulley (likely the idler). Water pumps CAN make a noise, but that's unlikely. Compressor is also a minute possibility.

like a squeal sound. like something needs a spray of wd40 type sound.

Get a 4' length of hose and use it as a stethoscope to listen in the belt drive area for the problem....... sounds like a bad idler or tensioner BUT could be anything on the belt drive system.
Also.....Look for the neighborhood cat sleeping under the hood.

One way to narrow down the squeal is to spray a little (VERY little) amount of WD40 on the ribs of the belt. If the squeal immediately disappears, then you've found your problem. If it's still there, do the same to the idler until you narrow down the source.

Thanks for the help guys. So the noise has dissappeared after driving again for about an hour.
prior to the noise, i did leave the engine on idle for about 20 minutes, something I don't usually do with this car so that probably has a lot to do with it. That being said, why would leaving the engine on idle cause a mechanical part to react differently? In this case causing a squeak.

I would start with replacing the serpentine belt. Cheap and good routine maintenance to do anyways. If It still squeaks, you've narrowed down the culprit. Regardless, let us know how you make out. We like follow-ups!

Chances are it's your belt. Flat spots/form memory can develop in a short amount of time depending on the brand of belt you get. A quick way to test is to loosen the tensioner and rotate the belt past its resting position and see how long it takes for the squeal to come back.
