Viewing Rear View Camera while Driving Forward
Hello,
I'm wondering if there's a modification of some type which would let the driver see the rear view camera while driving forward.
The idea is that the driver would see an "electronic rear view mirror" on the navigation display.
This would be especially useful for those with dark rear-window tint, who has a hard time seeing out the rear window.
I realize it sounds like an absurd idea, but I think it's a SUPER NEAT concept.
Someone tried it on an IS and it worked, in this video:

Why would be my first question. Why not would be my answer, but that's neither here nor there.
If you really need to see whats behind you, wouldn't you be going in that direction and sort of negate the problem with really dark tint? Just don't see a practical reason to need to see behind you while driving forward.
You can always install dashcams and watch it later.

greg3852 and Dr. Jekyll,
I really do think it's a neat concept, and it could be very useful in urban driving environments (such as NYC) where you REALLY need every driving aid possible to be aware of your surroundings.
Maybe the Prestige Society or VAIS folks will develop this feature via their add-on devices.
I would certainly purchase it!

Chevy truck customer of mine once asked for this to watch the trailer hitch.
We didn't have it then but it would seem to be easy enough to do.
Carista maybe?

Here's another possibility -

I've been toying with buying the Lukas 7950. My only hesitation is the wiring to the rear facing camera. I'm guessing within a year there will be good wireless models.

One of the options on these hidden menus enable the backup camera on D. Not sure it works on all NAV versions. Worked on my 2008 and I think you have to have Parking assist.

Available on some new vehicles. It probably will be standard in a few years.

I really do wonder if the the 2013+ navigation system has some type of "override" via "test mode" or something similar.
As a matter of fact, I might start a separate thread on this...
