To say it is rare to get a worthy LS at the auction may be true. I however got a LS430 from a broker from the auction and have driven it 80 k miles now without a single problem. The price was very cheap and I could not be happier. Usually these are adult driven cars and with the existing warrantees, condition reports, and if you get the vin # you can do some research ahead of time.

I have read there are paint gauges to check for paint thickness on cars which may indicate a accident. Are they effective?

Indeed. The key is to do as much research on a specific VIN# and vehicle history as possible just like any other big ticket item you would buy. The condition reports are invaluable and if the Lexus is coming off lease or from a reputable dealer than all the better. Many times it is truly buyer beware however great wholesale prices abound for the keen-minded buyer.

Probably so but I would rely on the expertise of a broker with 10 - 20 years experience as well as knowing where the Lexus comes from.

There are good cars there for sure, it's just if you are picky it can be tough. Most cars are off lease cars and a lot of the time it seems the owners don't care about the car because it is a lease and they just turn the car in once the lease is up. Most have scratches and little dings in the bumpers that need to be fixed and the ones that have had body work done are subpar and easy to notice even without a paint meter. The clean ones also tend to go for a higher price than the average you see looking at the post sale results.

When I went looking for a car there I used a paint meter because it is accurate and very quick, however they are not cheap. I like going there just looking at all of the exotic cars they have (Lambos, Ferraris, etc.).

I have a question. On the list above it says "Sold Price." Does that mean these vehicles are already sold, or is that the price it is selling for?

That's what the dealers actually paid for them at the auction not including the auction fees paid to Manheim auction house. So if the dealers buys it for let's say $30K and then has another $1K in fees, reconditioning, shipping, etc. costs for a total of $31K in it -- then they'll probably try retailing it for $37K and look to get $34K - $35K for it. Of course many factors play a role so sometimes you never know what the dealer truly has in it. But in general these auction prices are what they actually paid for them.

If you have a reliable & trustworthy broker then maybe they'll charge just $500 fee and you get it for wholesale cost.

Sorry for the very basic questions, but does a broker bid on a car E Bay style? As for caveat emptor issues, how would you ensure that the car didn't have the wind leak problem?
