Default Plugging a radar detector into the wire harness of the auto dimming mirror

I would like to add a radar detector to the passenger visor and would need to connect the wire to the mirror harness like in the pic at the bottom of this page

Has anyone done some similar before? how easy it is to access the wire harness of the mirror?

Wiring is accessed by lowering the overhead glasses case, removing the two Phillips screws behind the two pop-out trap doors then do some subtle prying, it pops right out then exposing the wiring, circuit board, etc.

I understand some have tied into the large black wire for positive and the ground bracket for negative source. Might wanna confirm this with a voltmeter as I haven't actually done this myself. Dunno if it's a switched source or not.
Makes for a nice short run to 'detector.

Only problem with that is... you lose the mute function on your X50.

I have mine located in the top left hand side of the car strictly for radar (No need to set it low for Laser since laser is immediate). Because its up there, I stretched out my wire and ran it down the pillar, under the dash, and around the right side of the foot well up into the cigarette lighter. This way the wire is gone from view, and I still retain my mute function.

Thank you Whit and TJW98LS for the info, so maybe i should use a smartcord to resolve the mute issue.

Any recommendation for a good installer in the SF bay area?
