Tire Pressure: Is 39 PSI too much?

well.... i wouldnt go to 40 psi on factory 18's. i set them at 38 in customers cars and my own. never seen center wear on either mine or customer's cars that show up for scheduled services. their tires are always in good shape adn worn evenly.
i think you guys are thinking of high air pressure in an old school big sidewall tire. in that case, high air pressure will cause center wear. it's even visual, blow one up to about 42 psi and look at it. the center bulges out.
try that with a modern performance low profile. the carcass is much stiffer. the center doesn't bulge out at all.
i dont' care either way, they're your tires, i just try to share my first hand experience and knowledge. i'm factory certified to work on lexus, audi, jaguar and nissan. i've been through all the school and classes and done all the work. working on cars isnt just a job to me, it's what i do for fun too.

Just got back from my first (free) service at 5K miles. The tech put my tires at 35 (sticker on the car says 33) and 38 for the spare. I think that is a couple of pounds higher than when I got the car (from the same dealer).

I experimented and found that filling to 35/36 cold resulted in 39 around town after warming up. Ride is much improved in my mind. I also had the experience that the tires were 40 cold when delivered, and bounced around for a week or two before I bled them down to 33, which is what was recommeneded. I was not happy with the ride at that pressure, and it seems better now at 10,000 miles and 36 cold pressure, whichis where the techs filled them after replacing a tire. I have already had to replace two Bridgestones because of nails in the sidewalls, and thus I am not really worried about tire wear any more.

Tire Pressure Recommendation for OEM 19's and N2
What PSI do you suggest for BRIDGESTONE 245/45/19 TURANZA TIRES on five spoke OEM Lexus wheel?
Also, anybody a fan of filling tires with Nitrogen (N2)?
Costco buddy will refill tires with N2 for free...
Benefit is supposedly:
- Less leakage
- 1-2 MPG improvement
- No H2O in N2 that will rust wheel

Yeah, I heard about N2 tires, mostly in racing, but then air is 80% N2 anyway, and it is hardly worth going out of my way to get that to 100%; I am ready for any N2 defenders out there and readily admit I am ignorent in this area. I live near a large bogy of Salt water, and so far I have not had to replace any rusty wheels. Why would you expect to get better milage with N2. Perhaps with helium <g>. I have 12,000 miles on my tires and have yet to fill them with air, though the service folks may have done it.
