The reason I mention it, is it seems that the auto tranny is still mysterious (to me, the drain and fill ok if fluid pink or dirty but not burnt)....I wonder if any simply go 200k+ having never been touched, or they fail if drain and fills not performed early enough. We seem to have cases right here on the forum where the tranny fails right after a drain and fill....

Now I've got the triangle with exclamation point, kind of annoying, I want to do it right and reset only after I've changed my oil....also under information the filter and oil have expired as I set them to 4976 (had gone 14 by the time I realized it was there)....

I go every 7500 miles and have ever since it came out of warranty. Before that, every 5K. Always used synthetic 5W-30. I do it at 7500 because it's a waste of my time and resources to change it sooner than that. Just my opinion, yours can be different.

Isn't THE BOOK's recommended oil change interval 5k miles? Why would anyone want to go beyond what THE BOOK recommends, of 5k mile intervals?
It's funny how many people want to do preventive and other services PRIOR to whatever the 'book's' recommended interval is, yet so many of you are finding excuse after excuse (synthetic, bigger oil filter, color is golden, etc, etc) to NOT change the oil within THE BOOK'S recommended 5k oil change interval.
Personally, I have my LS on a 3k or 3 month timer interval using the NAV & MAINTENANCE reminder buttons. Do I end up doing it at 3 months or 3k miles? Hardly never ever ever! That schedule though, gives me enough time and distance so that I can ALWAYS change before the 5k mile mark. You know, the 5k interval that THE BOOK recommends. I also use the most inexpensive oil & filter available. She's got almost 150k on the ticker and no blue smoke. Just my input.

Usage patterns vary a lot and that to some extent affects how often you should change oil and filter.
I change my oil on our cars every 5k miles and always use high qaulity filter and full syn oil like Pennzoil or M1. For us that means an oil change every 6-9 months as we don't drive a lot of miles. We drive short trips (3-4 miles several times a day) and this is lots harder on engine and oil than longer higher mile trips. I take my used oil and filter to our recycling center. Most large retailers selling oil happily accept used oil and filters.
The only way to know for sure how far to push your OCI based on your driving and usage patterns is to have your specific used oil samples lab tested on a periodic basis.

I change every 10k
Motor oil today has amazing additives. For that reason, I like to squeeze the value out of it. Every 10k (ie, 150k, 160k, etc.), the oil change includes filter and full synthetic.
My LS430 is approaching 270k miles. The oil stays clear, and several mechanics have commented on how quiet the engine idles.

As mentioned in another thread, I wimped out at 5,400--let the maint reqd light go for a week, then did it. Too bad the reminder is not condition based, but maybe on a new Lexus it is (unless they still have 5k services on 2017 cars? that would be incredible)....

Over the 80+ years of my life and 120+cars from a 1909 Model T to a 2008 Sky roadster and several boats and airplanes, I have tried many oils, intervals and read many articles and studies.
On a 62 Mercedes diesel I went 15,000 miles regularly with no ill affects. A study with police cruisers in Florida showed100K and not even changing filters was acceptable with engines that never shut down.
What my reading and experience tell me is that there is no real answer except analysis of the oil periodically. But 3K and 5K are ridiculously short. 10K is easily safe unless you have a worn out engine. I rarely change oil until analysis shows it to be near exhaustion. And mycars run forever. Only engine that ever failed was a 1964 Mustang 6 cyl that my daughter let go dry so it was on NO oil. It threw a rod....surprise.
So why does the manuf suggest 5K, ...liability....doesnt want to be blamed. Why would anyone NOT go to 10K in spite of what THE BOOK RECOMMENDS. Well, one reason would be very dirty environment like dirt roads and sand, or a worn out engine.

Again, I wish I could find it, car mfgs have gotten smart in securing their docs from the web. BMW even prevents alldata from getting their normal info.
Anyway, way back when, Toyota engineers wrote a dissertation and proved that synthetic motor oil was of absolutely no benefit to their motors up to 500k miles. Isn't it odd, that many of us use synthetic, because we "love" or "care" about our Lexus? When the PhD'd engineers who designed them state dino juice is more than good enough....again I argue that the oil is $26, less $10 rebate, so we're splitting hairs on if $16 is a lot or it isn't, over dino juice...

Mobil 1 was developed for gas turbine engines and had an amazing result in reducing engine wear (from analysis of the oil, by measuring the maount of metallic in the oil).
In my opinion, trying to save a few dollars from extended oil changes is a very bad bet. It's almost like abusing a baby by not properly feeding it !

TTBomB uses XL oil, and I assume that XL stands for Extra Long or Extended Life. I use regular bulk oil from my Lexus dealer so I will not be extending my interval beyond 5,000 miles. there are commercials now for oil that lasts 1 year regardless of mileage so oil technology is improving all the time. I thought that using synthetic oil and not going 10,000 miles is a waste, like if I was to change my oil at 3,000 miles when my dealer recommends the 5,000 miles. also I was wondering if I should change my oil after 6 months even if I have not gone the full 5,000 miles. sometimes I don't drive as much as I used to. it has been 6 months since my last change, but I am 750 miles short of the full 5,000 miles.
