How does the LS know miles since refuel
and mpg on the tank? What triggers it to know that we added fuel, the level changed??? At first I thought I had reset these figures, but it's not the case....

My display for "Range" changes depending on my driving for that week. If I am tooling back and forth between Milwaukee and O'Hare, I've seen as high as 413 miles range after refueling. If I'm off work and driving around town, it can be as low as 320 miles range after refueling. So, the trip computer must be able to calculate average mpg, with throttle position.

Yes - the ECU likely does this based on a predictive algorithm which is based on past history of throttle input. Ofcourse, there is no way it can actually predict how you may drive the next week after refuel so best it does is base it on history. If you drive a full week to O'Hare and back, then refuel in Mke most likely the calculated range shown will be > 400 miles due to the computer assuming the next tank will also be spent driving back and forth, What it does not know and can consider is that your entire driving habits for the following week is in city.
The only thing I look at is average mpg. Lifetime, since I purchased the car, has remained stoically between 21 and 24 MPG. Never moved past that.

I am "old school" and keep a mileage log and record each fill up. I have a long daily commute and depending on driving conditions the car regularly gets 23-25 MPG. After a full tank refill, the "Range" displays anywhere from "540 Approx" to "570 Approx"... A bit optimistic so between 400-500 is the max I would consider between fuel stops (went 502 one time and had about 1.5 gal remaining).
The display and calculations depicted are a good reference but I would not put too much trust in the numbers.
