Default Dumb Question of the Day - Reinstall Battery Cover?

I just installed a new battery. Couldn't decide whether to reinstall the OEM plastic battery cover. I left it out because it got in the way and appears to serve no useful purpose. That said, was I wrong? Is there a good reason to have reinstalled it? Does it have a purpose? Thanks.

What does it look like? I don't think I have one. My 1998 Maxima SE also has a 24F battery, and the original one had a plastic box with a big window on it...is this what the LS came with as well?

edit I looked and I do have that box...why not keep it....

I suspect its there to help contain any acid in case of a ruptured battery. Its too thin and doesn't have any insulation on it to keep heat away from the battery...

really.....on my Maxima, the LF quarter panel has rust, and I asked my uncle what do you think happened? He said I'd guess it's from the battery.....DA**! I wonder if keeping that plastic would have prevented the corrosion....and I wonder if the corrosion started with the original 24F battery, which had filler caps? Because all others were sealed, batteries #2,#3,#4.....maybe I would keep it then just in case, I'd freak out if my 8 yr FLA '06 LS started to rust!

Probably keeps heat currents from the engine getting to the battery but it's not really necessary. If you feel like a perfectionist put it back otherwise bag it.
