whining
lately I noticed a whine like with an electric motor coming from the rear.
First I suspected the tires but the sound of the tires changed with the road surface while the whining sound remained steady with the speed. It drops off (like an electric motor) when speed is reduced and increases with faster driving. It starts at about 40 mph. At 60 or 70 mph it gets really annoying
Any ideas?

+1, sounds like a bad wheel bearing. I had the same problem and replaced mine a few years ago. Here's the write-up I posted
