Default 01-03 Mark Levinson # of speakers

Just something curious. I remember reading the 2003 LS brochure it states that the ML option comes with 11 speakers. My 03 has the ML and i only see 7 positions for speaker placement. 2 on the dash/windshield. 2 front door woofers on the bottom. 2 rear door woofers on the bottom. And a subwoofer. Where are the rest?

Do the ones on the corners of the dash and rear door contain two-way style speakers in one housing? Like a tweeter + midrange set up? That's the only way it would add to 11 in my mind.

My 2001 LS430 with ML/Nav has 7 actual speaker enclosures.. 2 tweeters on dash, 2 midrange front doors, 2 on rear doors and one (Very Expensive) rear subwoofer.

I'll have to go dig out my '03 sales brochure. I used to own a '03 UL. I don't remember if mine had 7, 9, or 11 speakers. The '04-'06 has 11 but they made a few changes to the ML system beginning in '04. IF the '03 does have 11, then the extra 4 are in the front and rear doors (think 2-way speakers).

So yes, confirmed with my '03 sales brochure - 11 speakers, 7 locations. I also ran across some hand written notes I had researched about the ML system. Got that info from the ML website (when I owned the car) which provided details about their system in the LS. Of course the '03 model details are no longer avail on their website.

But anyway, the front door speakers are woofers and midrange. The rear door speakers are midrange and tweeters. So two speakers per door location plus the tweeters in the dash and the subwoofer - theres your 11.

Oddly enough, when I refoamed my front speakers I didn't notice any more speakers other than the woofer itself. I have an inkling that the tweeters in the dash also contains a small midrange driver behind / around it possibly. It's just a theory though.

Hmm well that would be interesting. But then again my notes may have been wrong on this. Or the website could have been wrong. I never had a reason to take the speakers out to know for sure.

I believe that beginning in the '04 models, they separated the rear door mid and tweeter into two different locations in the door. You can see this in pictures of the rear door panels.

My 01 UL w/ ML and Nav had 11 speakers total. There was a tweeter/mid combo on each side of the dash, a single woofer in each front door, a tweeter/mid combo in each rear door and the subwoofer on the rear deck.
