Default "Clunk" from front suspension during drive

I've been reading about suspension noise here and I believe I have to replace the cap on my LF strut. I get a clunk in the LF suspension at rough road imperfections such as when the road is being resurfaced and I drive across the transition between the construction part and a paved part.

I need clarification on the actual part because it seems only the air-suspension parts has the word "cap" in the part description.

http://www.lexussouthatlantaparts.co...roduct=9916002

I believe the part to be 48609 (Part Number: 4868022050) but I am not sure.

Please advise.

This is my first attempt to stop this noise before going to the dealer for further inspection.

Thank you!

It sounds more like the classic lower control arm ("LCA") bushing, and/or the lower ball joint.

Agree w/ Tom. My car made a "clunk" when stopping at slow speeds. Quite noticeable. Also a slight but noticeable vibration at just under 60 mph. LCA replacement solved both problems.

Your post caught my eye, tallcaguy. I just had new Pirelli P7+ put on and road force balanced and feel slight vibration in the wheel above 50mph. I also felt the same vibration with the previous set of Michelins. It is a very slight vibration but definitely present. Could it really be LCA bushings at 56K miles on the odometer? Thank you.

I was reading the service report on a 94 LS430 base (shocks/springs). The car has 112,000 miles. The Lexus Tech wrote on the report the car needed Strut mount "Hats" and lower control arm bushings. Lexus does not replace a shock until it leaks. This car had a leaking left shock @35k miles.
If you are doing the work yourself, go visit Rockauto.com for parts and replace everything that has a rubber component. Sway bar bushings should be lubed or replaced-front & back.
I use southaltantic for my OEM Lexus parts on my 92 SC400. Generic parts I get from Rock.

Check for a 5% discount for Rockauto, just google for it.
You will need a Spring Compressor to get the Strut mounts off. Might as well get shocks, too.
I've been eyeing those 02 LS430 cluster needles I think I can use them in my SC.

If you want Lexus part it is 4868050110 strut mount-$111.79 + 481572270 rubber sleeve-$36.75.
Use Monroe strut mount kit-from Rockauto.com (includes rubber sleeve)-$43.89. Use Monroe shocks and get another discount.

Part# 48609 is highly unlikely to fix your problem. Part# 48680 is more likely, but do check the LCA bushing first.

Yes. Any rubber parts can wear out because of age. Maybe the Sac summer heat is a factor also? Hope the new ride is working out well.

One easy way to tell if your LBJ's are nearing the end of their life is go to a parking lot and slowly drive in the tightest circle the car will do. If you feel and hear the tires kind of stumble or push on the pavement vs a smooth turn this is a great indication your LBJ's are not too happy anymore.

Question 1: is the car safe to drive until fixed?
Question 2: will the noise/feeling transmit through the steering column?

I have the same mild vibration at higher speeds. I'm going to eventually replace all of the suspension components over the next year but I'm going to start with the motor and transmission mounts.
I'm wondering if the mild vibration is due to motor mount wear.

Thanks, tradosauru, you may be onto something. I'll have my mechanic take a closer look next time I have the car in because it does lurch a bit when shifting from park to drive, or reverse to drive, and others have pointed out that may be related to engine/transmission mounts too.

I ordered the two engine and one transmission mounts yesterday. I just couldn't see spending $400 to get OEM.

I will replace the mounts next weekend and take pictures.

I'm surprised there is no How-to with photos on how to change the engine mounts. I

Thanks for all your guidance.

I obtained some OEM bushings off eBay a couple weeks ago, and had a local shop install them for $191 w/tax.

$138 for the bushings, $191 for the labor= $329 total.
