Default Does AC need to be HOT(no cold) to get diag codes?

symptom: as its been HOT, my AC blows hot air for a bit. After a few minutes and or restart car, the condensor kicks in and blows ice cold AC.

So there is a diagnostic process:

I ran it before with no telling codes. Does this diag need to be in a failed state to useful?

I assume I can have a pressure switch/refill done on the AC as a likely way to fix the issue.

Please share your advice :-D
