The issue with pressures and hard downshifts was most likely either an ECU problem or a stuck valve in the valve body. It's also possible the converter was not unlocking correctly.

The wrong fluid amount would effect the solenoids working properly and the torque converter, both of which were replaced by the transmission shop.

Who knows with this shop, but they should have been able to tell you why they did what they did.

Stories like this make me scared to touch the transmission fluid in these cars. I am just approaching 90k on my 2005 and transmission shifts like new. I was wanting to do some drain/fill or a dealer flush but may just hold off. Coming out of the used car/vehicle sales industry the rule with auto transmissions was dont touch it unless the fluid is burnt looking or trans acts up.

After being in the used car business for almost 30 years I absolutely agree 100%!!!

I agree but I think you missed part where I said I used WS fluid and checked the amount at the proper temperature (using TechStream to monitor the temp). Also, I did the last of the 2 qt change outs, last August. The car shifted just fine and then suddenly had issues 4 weeks ago. It wasn't something that slowly came on.

Anyhow, it is what it is. I'll never know what went wrong.

I think my issue was an anomaly. I would still vote for slow drain and fill of new fluid at that mileage.

Default Hard shift 2-1

Got it! 2005 LS430, wife went through car wash and the hard shift started. It's the ECM! The ECM is NOT behind the glove box. It is behind the driver side headlight under cover with three 10mm bolts. Pulled the ECM, sent it to S.I.A. Electronics for rebuild. $135 free return shipping. Back in business! Already programmed, plug and play.

What exactly did they repair on your ECU??

When you take your car to the shop, there is labor and parts contained in invoice...(Also done because labor is not taxed and parts are here in Illinois)

Please post a copy of your invoice with personal information retracted...

Thanks...

i did not take car to shop. I pulled ECM and sent UPS to SIA. They reconstructed transmission circuitry on circuit board.

Toyota store and tranny shop both tried to sell me new transmission $4,500-5,500. SIA Electronics said it's an ECM design flaw, reconstructed circuit board.

They probably just resoldered a couple of joints.

Be sure and follow this procedure should you decide to drain and fill again. If you were 1/2-quart low and continued to replace exactly two quarts you would continue to be two quarts low. A six inch piece of wire to jump the OBD2 port and following this procedure will guarantee you are at the correct level.Don't assume that a transmission shop, Lexus dealer or independent Lexus mechanic follows this procedure or uses TechStream to verify the fluid level. My independent Lexus mechanic didn't and before doing my first drain and refill I was able to determine that that the transmission was 1/2-quart overfilled.

I'm sorry that you had to pay $3100 for transmission repairs. With the strange symptoms that you described if the tests previously posted were not conclusive you had to take it in for service.
