Default 2003 LS430 - Options for Y-Pipe and Muffler

Hello,

I have been getting P0430 messages every few months and now the car exhaust has been getting louder. I took it to an exhaust shop that I've done business with before and they told me the following parts need replacing:

1) Front Y-pipe - Lexus PN# 17410-50390 - approximately $1250 from myLparts
2) Right rear muffler - Lexus PN# 17430-50170 - approximately $420 from myLparts

I am obviously not going to pay the price for the Y-pipe. They say that the front cat is okay and they can fab up a custom manifold for the y-pipe for cheap, but they want $670 CAD for the muffler alone. I believe this isn't even OEM. I am used to getting my parts from the US as they bend us over here on the parts in Canada.

What are my options for the muffler? Do the mufflers often go bad? I live in Quebec and they put salt and stones on the road that eat the car exhausts badly.

Can I replace the Y-pipe myself? Are there any welds or is it just clamps. If so, what are the best parts to get? Has anyone had problems with a custom Y-pipe?

I told the shop I would think about it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Amazon offers Walker # 55332 (left) - 55331 (right) stainless rear muffler assemblies ~ $270 US / $320 US shipped.

Here's a Y-Pipe assembly in Canada. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-2002-20...hUEKrl&vxp=mtr

I don't see any welded connections between replacement parts. They are either bolted or clamped together.

Don't go OEM on exhaust parts, they have aftermarket stuff that will work just fine for a fraction of the price. or maybe look in a salvage yard for something like a muffler that's in good shape.

I don't know what services like this cost in Canada, but here in the states this would probably be a $100- $200 job from a competent exhaust shop to patch some things up for a few hours of labor.

But without looking at it first hand, I don't know how corroded the system is. But to spend $1800 just for a few factory exhaust parts sounds really extreme. I would get other quotes.

Also, I don't think the muffler would have anything to do with the code being thrown. And the Y-pipe could maybe just be a connection leak.

Rock Auto is where in i bought my replacement Y-pipe and it works great. I ended up finding a member here that had both OEM mufflers for sale in the classified ads. If you are half-way mechanically inclined, you can do most the work yourself. Just make sure you have all the correct tools available.

Thanks Tom! Are you sure those are stainless? I see them on Summit Racing and they say aluminized steel:

$286 (probably 350 CAD) is a hell of a lot better than $700. Any other exhaust companies to check out?

Seems like there are two models from Magnaflow:

PN# 24169 and PN# 51454. There seems to be around a $100 dollar price difference between the two. Can't really figure out why.

Best price seems to be from Davico on rock auto. Around $239.

I've seen that one. It's the Davico. Did you have any issues with fitment on that one? I am mechanically inclined so as long as there is no welding I'm good.

What tools are required? I have most of the basics.

Are there any accessories to replace at the same time? Any improvements for the existing OEM parts?

Thanks for the diagram and nice to know there's no welding involved. Only problem will be rust.

The end where the cat meets the resonator had to be welded in my situation but everything else seems to fit perfectly. Basic tools outside of welding is all you need. No real improvement other than sealing up the leaks i had along the line. I did leave the heat shields off this time because thats what cause a leak in the first place. Nevertheless, im satisfied with the product.

Did you do this job yourself or did you buy the part and take it to the shop? Just curious why it needed to be welded?

I did take it to a shop due to me not having a lift to get under the car. Also for the welding. If possible, spray all bolts with PB blaster to make life easier.
