85K maintenance Check
Just called Lexus and they wanted to charge me 179.00 for:
Oil change
Tire rotation
topping fluids
and possibly overall check
Is it worth it?

Doesn't seem to bad IMO, but then again i'm at the time of my ownership of cars where I don't mind paying the dealer to do my work for me. I mean if I were to take my car to do all of those things to a local mechanic it may be what? A $50 difference? I don't mind paying $50 to get the Lexus treatment of a free loaner, free water and just the closure that I know my car is in great hands.

diy tire rotation - $0
Topping fluids - $3

diy Total $40
Dealer charges $12-14 quart for syn oil and $14-16 for filter. At a minimum buy 6 quarts of full syn oil at Walmart or Costco for $30, buy Toyota oil filter for $7 and take those in to dealer - oil change labor should be $30-35 max - so oil change will cost you $60-70 instead of $120...no sense just throwing money away.

if you are able to work on your own car invest in a set of jack stands and a jack you will save a lot of money.
if you cant then go to your local toyota dealer or a independent shop and get it done.its nothing that requires a lexus dealer to do.

should also include a carwash. if you just got the car and want to know if anything needs attention they will do a complete exam. watch out for the 90,000 mile one as it is really expensive.

in Lubbock is $147 for oil change , rotation, inspection and carwash.

Granted I live in Los Angeles, where it's ridiculous here, but Bev Hills Lex wanted $109 for just an oil change. NOTHING ELSE.
Called Toyota and they did it for $49.00. They even did a comprehensive, full inspection for free, inspected and topped all fluids. I've NEVER had a Lexus dealer do that, EVER.
They can go ***** themselves.
Lexus service is never getting my money ever again, unless its for like a MAJOR engine repair, and even then I'd still consider Toyota as long as they had the qualified techs. You're paying a premium for free cookies, CNN on a flat screen, and a loaner (but only for major work--no oil change loaners) at the Lexus dealer.

It's never a good idea to just give a dealership a sort of "blank check" like that, only pay them for an actual procedure they perform, not to just check things out.
They'll do the same rip off for things like 60k mile "tune ups" etc when most of the bill is just fluff.
When they change you oil, believe me, they're told to look for work to upsell to the customer, so you're car is being inspected.

i just don't get why people think dealerships are worth a premium versus a quality independent shop. Maybe for a particularly stubborn problem that you can't get a correct diagnosis for but for the vast majority of work, including timing belt/water pump replacement, a good independent is more than capable of doing the work. These cars are just not that exotic or difficult or complicated to work on. So to answer the OP question...you can do better...if you really want to take it to a dealer, try Toyota or otherwise go independent.....best of all is DIY..imminently doable and cost effective on this car.
